NP Thyroid problems and switching to T4/T3

I have been taking Acella NP Thyroid for 1.5 years and doing so well but have just received a new batch that smell strange. I've now read on the Stop the Thyroid Madness website that a lot of people are doing badly on this new formulation of NP Thyroid and have got no proper answers from Acella. I am literally heartbroken - it has taken so long to get optimal.

Is anyone here doing well on the new NP Thyroid batch that frankly smell like cat-pee?

Can someone explain to me how I would switch to a T4/T3 combination?

I currently take 2 grains of NDT (120mg).

Hi Optimal, I was you a month ago and felt horrible on NP Thyroid too. I was on the new, smelly batch for a month and grew steadily worse on it. It does suck to have the NDT change on you after you spend such a long time to get well on it.

Regarding combo treatment, there is 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3 in 1 grain of NDT. So if you were to switch to T4 + T3, you would need to take 76 mcg of T4 and 19 mcg of T3.

Have you taken T3 before? Members on here recommended breaking it up throughout the day and splitting it into 3-4 smaller doses.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much Purpanda! Not taken T3/ T4 combo before and no idea how I even go about that?

For T4, do I go back to Levothyroxine and use a pill cutter for 76mg and where do I even get T3? Is it Cytomel?

You help is really appreciated here!!

Oh! And what did you switch to instead of NP Thyroid? It seems many of the US brands are now compromised according to STTM

I just realized my math was wrong. Talk about foggy brain. You would need 18* mcg of T3 if you take 2 grains, not 19.

Optimal, I was going to go the combo route, but decided to try out a Thai NDT called Thyroid-S. It has a lot of fillers and I’m still in the trial stages. Other Thai brands have gone out of business. I can give you more info if you’d like.

If you still plan to do synthetics and add T3, Cytomel is the brand name. I’m not sure if you can get generic T3 where you are. I’m very reluctant to go back to Levo, but if this doesn’t work out, I may have to.

Others have tried Armour but it is very, very expensive to obtain.

Thank you so much for your help!

Please send me any info you have on Thyroid-S. I'd prefer to go that route!!

Meanwhile, I'm not sure whether I should continue taking the funky NP Thyroid but I have nothing else to take :-(

I will PM you. In the meantime, you can try out OTC thyroid glandular supplements such as Metavive.

How long have you been on it? I would suggest stop taking it because there may be toxicity issues. I personally felt the pills burn my tongue and esophagus and that is not a normal overdose reaction from NDT.

I've just taken two days worth of the NP Thyroid (M328G19-2). They don't burn but I'm watching closely for a reaction and have ordered Metavive I. Advice on dosing there would be helpful too.

If it was from an older supply, you might be fine. I knew mine was problematic because I started getting constipation, heart pain and fatigue.

It looks like you bought the 15 mg. I think you may need to take 8 capsules to get the equivalency of 2 grains (120 mg).

There are batches that are ok. I recently filled a prescription for more than a year's worth of NP Thyroid, getting batch M330C19-2. I've not found them to be a problem, although I'm still a few weeks away from my next blood tests, so cannot confirm yet whether the new batch results in my levels varying at all. I feel fine on them.

From what I understand, some pharmacies order a huge supply at a time. Your pills might be from an older batch. NP was reformulated this summer, so if the batch was manufactured prior, it might still be OK.

These were a new batch. I checked the STTM list before ordering. There were batches with similar numbers that are reported to be problematic, but this particular batch did not appear on the list and, in my experience, seems to be ok.

Oh that is promising to hear! I hope the newer batches no longer have the same issues.

Me too! JumpJiving - can you PM me the website you ordered from?

There were reports that it was a transient, although very unfortunate/annoying/unpleasant, problem. Only time will tell if the manufacturer has really got on top of the problem, or whether more problem batches arise. The last time I read through all of the related threads, it still seemed that nobody was publicly saying what the problem was caused by, so it's impossible to know for sure whether the manufacturer has really resolved things.
