I’ve got an underactive thyroid and I do suffer occasionally with dry eyes but just recently the pink bit in the corner of my eye you know the bit next to the nose? It has become itchy and feels prickly. I put some eye drops in but they aren’t doing any good it’s just in one eye. Please could you tell me a good eye drop to use for dry eyes and has anyone else had a problem like this with their eye. Thank you.
it might be conjunctivitis. i d leave it alone for a few days, and see what happens. although, having said that, i get itchy eyes myself, so i dunno
I think if I were you I would pop in and see your local optician. They are the experts in diagnosing sore eyes - especially as it is just the one eye you are having the problem with. You will also be able to get a good selection of eye drops for dry eyes there.
As for eye drops - I like HycoSan and Theolose Eye drops - they are both preservative free although at the moment I am using one recommended by my rheumatologist called Sno Tears - it is an ‘old style’ eye drop, that along with a gunky one called VitA POS for night time - I had to get the Sno Tears online as none of our local chemists or optician’s stocked it.
With a bit of luck you might be able to be seen at an optcian’s today and put your mind at rest.
I think I’ve used HycoSan in the past and it was really good so will buy some if chemist has it or I’ll order on line too. Many thanks x
Hi Tasia, definitely pop into your local optician and get it checked out. I suffer with dry eye from having TED and find HycoSan Extra and VisuXL drops are best- use often to alleviate discomfort. My eyes have never been pink though- it may be worth taking an antihistamine as you may have had an allergic reaction to something (common reactants are shampoos and makeup). Hope you feel better soon!
A pharmacist is trained to advise and is quicker and easier to see. If I were you I would go to the chemist as a first port of call, especially as it's Saturday and you don't want to suffer over the weekend.
A good home remedy, especially if there's an infection, is to bathe your eyes (both because of cross infection) in a salt solution (not too strong!)
Boracic crystals are perhaps even better if the chemist still sells them, again dissolve in warm water.

Thank you so much for your help. My eye feels a wee bit better this morning I did however have a terrible nights sleep as had bad anxiety over it as was so uncomfortable and itchy.. My eye isn’t red or anything and I actually think I’ve had a reaction towards something as it doesn’t seem to be conjunctivitis either so I did take antihistamine just in case but I will pop into my local chemist and see what they say. Thanks so much for all your advice x
Yes, recently actually started taking Zyrtec and washing my eyes with a product called lid wash ... no problems now
Make sure any eye drops you buy are preservative-free.
I have itchy eyes which I am sure is caused by insufficient tear production. As a result, particularly in the morning, my eyes feel dry, gritty, and my eyesight is affected by blurriness. I have found that using eye wash first, to do the cleaning job that my tears used to do, helps enormously. I follow that up with eye drops. I use Hycosan Extra.
The eye wash I use comes from Boots, and is the only one I like :

I don't use the eye bath supplied. Instead I put some of the eye wash on a small cotton wool ball and clean my eyes (gently) with that. Obviously I use a fresh cotton wool ball for each eye.
Not sure if it could be connected, and it took me years to work out but certain hair products cause me to get eczema on my eyelids, in the corner near my nose. It itches and starts getting red and scaly. I think it’s unrelated to my thyroid.
Now, the minute my eye starts itching I try and think what I’ve used. It’s weird as it doesn’t touch that part of my eye. It can be perfume too..
Twice I’ve had to resort to a mild steroidal cream from the doctor.
Hi Ruby Thanks for reply. I actually thought the same thing about hair products I did wash my hair and some shampoo went into my eyes but this happens often so I’m not sure it’s that what has caused it but it also could be hairspray I’ll keep my eyes covered next time I use it. I went into chemist and they gave me HycoSan to use and this morning my eye is so much better. I’ve no idea to be honest what caused it. It could be dry eyes or allergies anyway eye is much better..Thanks again have a great Sunday x
Hairspray is a definite trigger for mine. I don’t think I have to get it anywhere near my eyes for it to set me off. That’s why it has taken me years (25+) to work out. Shampoos that go nowhere near my eyes can be a problem.
In my 20s I had terrible dandruff that had to be sorted out by a doctor and I suspect it was a similar allergy. I also went to the doctors about my eyes and she said it was make up. I now know better.
I would look at any products that you’ve changed recently. I’m aware now but it can take a few weeks for it to be bad enough that I realise something has triggered it.

I had a prescription for sore eyes from GP but eyes not improving.
One of the doctors in the surgery didn't diagnose me but had prescribed something that didn't help and after a week I phoned GP again and that's when I was told to visit local opticians.
You have to see someone who is knowledgeable to make sure you don't have another 'autoimmune condition' called Blepheritis. My local optometrists had a person who diagnosed my condition and GP prescribed what she suggested.
Headaches, no energy, sore eyes, felling always tired and mild sore neck. Please help
