Hi all,I suffer with Hashimotos and on 100 mcg Levo and the last couple of months I have been supplementing with B-complex and 200 mcg Selenium.I have noticed alot of weightloss over the last month nearly one stone which is a bit worrying and I was wondering if supplementation is causing this

Thank you in advance for any advice.

A year ago your results suggested your were under medicated

Did you get dose increase in Levothyroxine?

Are you now on strictly gluten free diet?

Have you had bloods retested since?

If not, they probably need testing

Hashimoto's frequently affects the gut and often leads to low stomach acid and then low vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels affect Thyroid hormone

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten. Dairy is second most common.

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps, sometimes significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

While still eating high gluten diet ask GP for coeliac blood test first or buy test online for under £20, just to rule it out first

Coeliac obviously linked to weightloss

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet

(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)

Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

Hi,

I’ve also lost weight with Hashis and am taking 200mcg selenium. I think cutting out Gluten has contributed to my weight loss, as I can’t reach for a shop bought sandwich or cake quite as easily as perhaps I once did. I haven’t attributed weight loss to the selenium, as I was supplementing selenium before I started Levo (as I have TED).

Well, I would say yes. The selenium (Se) is improving your conversion rate (T4 to T3) because Se is the catalyst for that reaction. T3 is the chemical which makes you more lively so you will move more, your metabolism will increase and therefore you will lose weight.

Thanks LAHs,this is what I thought.I was pretty much always around the 11.5 stone in weight and I have been taking Selenium for around 6 weeks now and have dropped to about 10.5 and I have been eating normally. So I have a choice now ,stop selenium or have my bloods done and possibly get a reduction of Levo

Thanks for your reply

Hi Haynton,

Just wanta say that I'm happy for your post because it gave me an awareness on the importance of selenium in our body. I can see that we need it but too much can be very negative experience for our thyroid gland. In my search, I found the following website. I hope the forum doesn't mind my sharing the following website.
