No periods with Graves’ disease, on carbizamole?

Hi all!

I’ve been diagnosed with graves and have been seeing an endocrinologist for a while now, carbimazole 40mg daily at the moment, and my periods have completely stopped? Before starting treatment they were slightly irregular, heavy and painful, after starting carbimazole I had 2 months where my cycle was quite normal, 28 days, not too heavy or painful and lasted only 3-4 days. I’m now on day 57 of my cycle and no sign of period, I’m definitely not pregnant but I am getting a bit worried as I want children and tried unsuccessfully for 2 years before diagnosis of graves. Obviously not trying at the moment whilst having treatment but would like to once this is all over with.

Thank you!

Have you had TSI or TRab antibodies tested yet to definitively confirm Graves' disease?

Previous results suggest Hashimoto's

SeasideSusie recommended getting TSI or TRab antibodies tested (or results from endocrinologist)

You can have both Graves and Hashimoto's together.....which is more complicated

How long have you been on carbimazole?

Time to get retested perhaps

Hi,

Thanks for replying, I’m assuming I’ve had one of TSI or TRab antibodies tested as the endocrinologist requested a blood test to confirm graves but I didn’t get to see the results, they were sent straight to her from my gp. I’ve been on carbimazole since sometime in April, started on 10mg a day and has been increased each time I’ve been to see the endocrinologist, now on 40mg per day, as levels are still going up, again I haven’t got the results. I’m booked in for my next blood test in 2 weeks but not seeing endo till end of august. I’m hoping this is all normal for the condition or stress related, but I’m going to bring it up with her when I go back.

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

UK GP practices are supposed to offer online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

It's a good idea to keep good records of how you feel on each dose and results at that dose

Thyroid illness is definitely related to sex hormone. The general pattern is that being hyper thyroid reduces periods, and being hypo gives heavy periods.

But everyone is different and there are always exceptions.

Hi

I was diagnosed with Graves in February this year and prescribed 40mg on carbimizole straight away. My levels were really high as I had probably been undiagnosed for at least 6 months. I hadn’t noticed a change in my periods. I’ve always had quite light periods. Then in June I had excruciating period pains, a very heavy period and I wondered why. Since then I’ve started to keep a record of my period and in both July and August it has been very light and lasting a day or so max! There is alternative medicine so perhaps it is worth mentioning this to a GP?
