Depression and graves

I am currently on carbimazole 7.5mg. I am aware getting depressed among all other health issues is part of graves and I've just got to deal with it.

For how long?

Is depression a side effect of the medicine or is it associated with Graves directly ?

There is no one around who would keep up with someone who gets depressed day in and day out, out of the blue, for no reason. I'm irritated with myself. Just looking for some encouragement to hold on. Thanks.

I was very depressed when I was first diagnosed with Graves, I believe it is part of the illness. However when I went into remission the depression completely disappeared.

I presume you have read the leaflet about this drug.

Jean, depression in Graves mostly presents in the elderly. It's one of the atypical Graves symptoms in the elderly.

Looking back at your previous posts, you mentioned chronic anxiety, not being able to talk about problems, etc. Perhaps these other issues are causing u sufficient stress and anxiety as to make u depressed, and the Graves no doubt plays into that?

It might be helpful to seek out a professional counsellor, find someone to talk to, have an outlet for the things that are bothering you. It might possibly help stop u falling into a deeper depressive state.

This would be helpful and work in tandem with the carbimazole which is working to stabilise the Graves.

Hi Jean,

I read your previous posts and see you are young with children. My thyroid problems started before I had mine but were exacerbated after pregnancy. I also had depression and anxiety along with my toxic multinodular goiter and hyperthyroidism. I was diagnosed with Graves 2 years ago - and had a TT 5 months ago.

I’m afraid that goes with the territory and I know exactly how you feel. It is very discouraging. Has the carbimazole helped at all? How long have you been on it? It takes a while to kick in. I actually saw a therapist to help me deal with my situation back then and it helped enormously. I know that these symptoms lessen with the right medication, but in the meantime, you don’t feel any better - and talking to someone about coping mechanisms can be very useful. I don’t know if that is possible for you, but it is worth a try if you feel you have no support at home or from other family members and friends.

I’m sending good wishes your way today and hoping you feel better soon.
