Flaxseed bread mmmmm, have you tried it?

Anyone tried Flaxseed bread? Its only got 3 ingredients: flaxseed, water and salt!

I absolutely love it and wondered if anyone could advise on how much I am permitted to eat per day? I could easily eat the whole loaf smothered in butter, I believe it has lots of health benefits and its great if you're gluten, soy and dairy free and missing bread.

Well you're "permitted" to eat as much as you like, there's no law controlling ingestion of flaxseed 😂 But from what I've read, the Flax Council of Canada for instance, recommends a daily intake of 1 -2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed.

Thanks MasieGray, as I have it made into bread I've no way of knowing how much I'm eating. I worked it out to about 100 cal per slice, but how big is a slice LOL. I bake a loaf every few days.

I believe we don't digest all the calories from flaxseed and it has lots of health benefits, when you've given up gluten it's a yummy alturnative. I'll just stick to a couple of slices to 3 a day, unless someone can tell me I'm over indulging. 😊

You shouldn't be counting calories, anyway. Count nutrients, instead. :)

Hi greygoose, I don't count cals as I do intermittent fasting and eat when I'm hungry, usually twice a day. As its just, flaxseed, water and salt I can see how many calories are in it, but don't know how else you can measure it, and I want to eat too much. I'm pretty addicted to it, it so yummy.

What exactly do you think eating 'too much' is going to do to you? If you eat 'too much' - whatever that is - you'll probably just get fed up with it faster! :D

Well if you know the total ingredients and the produced weight of the loaf, you can work out from the weight of a slice, what proportion of ingredients or calories are in that slice. Certainly whole flax seeds are indigestible and hence why it's used as a constipation remedy, but that isn't the case when the seeds are ground into flour. Flaxseed is high in oil - about 42% - such that you can substitute some fat/shortening in recipes with ground flaxseeds, so if you are consuming the bread with butter you definitely are getting both fat and calories!

Hi, you make the flaxseed loaf sound really appealing, does it by any chance soak up sauce? That's one of the things I miss being gluten-free.

It's quite a solid bread think Hovis, I always eat it on it's own smothered with butter, not tried using it to mop up sauce but I suppose it would.
