Liver cleanse while hypo and with adrenal fatigue

Hi again,

I was wondering your thoughts on doing a liver cleanse with milk thistle. Since I'm off my Metavive, Adrenavive, and prednisone - as well as certain supplements like biotin and Bs - would now be a good time to do a liver cleanse?

I've wanted to do one for a while, but with all the probs I've had with getting adrenal and thyroid tests done, I've put it on the back burner.

Has anyone else done it who has adrenal and/or thyroid issues? It seems I have Hashi's, in case that makes a difference.

Oh, and should I leave off supplements if/when I do it?

Cheers.

Nico,

It all depends what you mean by a "liver cleanse". If you refer to cleaning up your diet and leaving out sugar, caffeine, alcohol, etc, all supported with something like milk thistle, Vit C and lots of water, then it would be good, as the liver metabolises hormones, filters toxins, cleans the blood, so it is important to have functioning well for optimal thyroid hormone synergy.

What type of liver cleanse were you thinking of ?

Why are you off all meds and sups ?

Hi Radd. Thanks for the reply.

I already do all of the above most days except the milk thistle. I just thought while I was off quite a few of my supplements and Adrenavive, Metavive, and cortisol it may be a good idea to clean house, since I know my liver must have been put through a lot.

And then again, I thought this may stress my liver instead of giving it a bit of a rest.

I do still have one cup of weak coffee a day, but I can easily stop that.

Anything else you think I should leave out, supplement-wise, and how long do people normally do a liver cleanse for? I've never done one before.

Sorry, I should have also said I'm off quite a few things as I'm currently taking thyroid and adrenal/cortisone tests. It's gone on for longer than necessary, as I've had a few issues with the tests.

I have hypothyroid and was cautioned by my very switched on integrative doctor to be careful about doing a full on liver cleanse program when thyroid or adrenal symptoms are happening. This is because it will cleanse / release a whole bunch of toxins into your system that your body will have to deal with. So if it can’t clear them out, they could cause more issues. However, she did say that using Milk Thistle supplement was fine as that supported the liver. I’m not an expert on this, but this is just the advice explained to me by my doctor for what that is worth. Hope it helps.

Thanks for that. It's all I intended doing, as I cleared out most toxins from my life and food a long time ago and only drink alcohol on special occasions - and I'm now a complete light-weight, so we're talking about a small beer or a glass of wine.

I just wanted to give my liver a bit of support while I happened to be off my meds.

Nico,

I wouldn’t introduce too much new stuff coz as you say, your adrenals need supporting and change can be stressful, but eating healthily and supplementing liver supports will help everything work better.

I used to be queen of liver cleanses 😂 but now older & wiser I really don’t think they are necessary if we eat & hydrate well. A few carbs & especially healthy fats are as important as all the fruit & veg.

Having a cup a tea a day is absolutely fine. I wouldn’t stop my one coffee a day now for anything. 😃

Great. So a couple of milk thistle capsule a day should be fine. I wasn't thinking of doing anything else - I'm certainly not in any condition to do anything drastic.

Since you know your way around a liver, do you see anything alarming in my recent test results?

Serum total protein 71 g/L 60 - 80 g/L

Serum albumin 36 g/L 35 - 50 g/L

" total bilirubin 7 umol/L 2-21 umol/L

" alkaline phosphatase 57 u/L 30 - 130 u/L

" globulin 35 g/L 20 - 35 g/L

" ALT level 6 u/L 5 - 40 u/L

It also says: sample haemolysed, analytes may be affected, whatever that means.

If there is anything out of whack, would milk thistle help? Thanks for all your help.

Nico

Yes, you want low ALT (enzymes). Bilirubin measures how well albumin is disposed of.

You want middle of range albumin. Yours is a little low in range. Inflammation can lower levels. Are you Hashi ?

I supplement Jarrows milk thistle. I x 15g tablet 15g a day.

Yes, just found out I'm Hashi's. So, I need to keep an eye on my liver from now on, I guess.

My MT is DigestEeze. It has very different levels to the one you take. 1 Tablet has 137.5 - 165 mg of standardised extract. This contains 82.5 mg silymarin. Dosage is 1-2 p/d.

Do you think MT will help with the issues you mentioned?
