I finally got my 16 year old daughter's test results back (I had pushed for blood tests to try and find a cause for her anxiety) and I'm so glad I got her tested. Although her TSH has come back ok thankfully at 1.5 (0.48-4.17) her ferritin came back at 5 ug/l (12-300) and vitamin D 38 nmol/l (50-200) so hopefully once we get her levels back up, she will feel much better!! I will be keeping hold of these results though so if there any problems in the future I have a TSH level to use as a guide...it runs in the family so it's highly likely.
I am obviously starting her on supplements but when would you recommend getting her re tested to see how it's going? I know getting ferritin up can take a while from my own experience.

So glad you have some answers to work on. It does make me wonder how many more young people are struggling with similar and being prescribed anti-depressants. We read and hear so much about depression and mental issues in the young these days ... Thank goodness your daughter has you at her side to take good care of her ... ☆☆♡☆☆
I was saying the same thing last night. There must be so many others just suffering. If I hadn't had Hashimitos and the associated problems (and found this group) I wouldn't have known to ask for these tests and then what would have happened to her? It's very worrying 😕

You're not going to self treat that are you? That is absolutely dire and she needs full blood count and iron panel, possibly she has iron deficiency anaemia and that needs more than self supplementing. I would hope she is referred to haematology and offered an iron infusion to get that level up quickly, then it's a case of maintaining it.
Her Vit D level of 38nmol/L (15.2ng/ml) needs 4,900iu D3 daily according to the Vit D Council (nearest is 5,000iu).
Retest after 3 months then when she's reached the level recommended by the Vit D Council/Vit D Society (125nmol/L/100-150nmol/L) then she'll need a maintenance dose to keep it there, which may be 2000iu daily, maybe more or less, maybe less in summer than winter, it's trial and error so it's recommended to retest once or twice a year to keep within the recommended range. You can do this with a private fingerprick blood spot test with an NHS lab which offers this test to the general public:
D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems such as hardening of the arteries, kidney stones, etc.
D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds if taking tablets/capsules/softgels, no necessity if using an oral spray
Magnesium helps D3 to work. We need Magnesium so that the body utilises D3, it's required to convert Vit D into it's active form. So it's important we ensure we take magnesium when supplementing with D3.
Magnesium comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds if taking tablets/capsules, no necessity if using topical forms of magnesium.
Check out the other cofactors too (some of which can be obtained from food).
Was only TSH tested? If so that's not enough. TSH can be normal when Central Hypothyroidism is present, that would be suggested when TSH is normal, low or slightly elevated with a low FT4.
I know!! I have no idea how she's functioning, and she is doing GCSE's! We were just prescribed ferrous fumarate although I'm giving her my Solgar Gentle iron because I found the prescribed stuff too harsh for me. She has had a full blood panel and isn't showing as anaemic.
Regarding Thyroid, I did ask for a thyroid panel to be done and explained that thyroid disease runs in the family, I have Hashimotos etc...but that's still all they tested.
I will get her re tested in 3 months then and push for T3 test at the same time. They have never tested me for antibodies so I think I can forget that. I have magnesium and K2 etc.. as I have had deficiencies so take lots of supplements myself.
Her other blood results were in range...no idea where in range they should be but the MCH was the only one that was under.
No they didn't test b12 which I'm annoyed about too as I specifically mentioned that at the appointment. I do supplement her twice a week with that and a b complex but daren't give her any more unless she's been tested.
Yes she is but it costs extra doesn't it? We've spent so much money recently on counselling etc.. plus the cost of my blood tests/NDT/supplements. I think we'll have to work on getting her ferritin and Vit D up and then think what to do about possible thyroid disease. The thought of her having to go what I have trying to get the right medication and dose to eliminate symptoms fills me dread, especially when she is coming up to such an important time in her education
I’m not sure if things have changed recently but Blue Horizons were happy to test both my children’s thyroids when they were 9 and 11. I hope they haven’t changed their policy as I struggled to find anywhere else and the GP would only do the usual TSH.
I shouldn't think they've changed their policy Kipsy I'm just going by a post I remembered where someone had a 16 year old and said that Medichecks wont test anyone under 18, and another member replied that Blue Horizon had tested her 16 year old with no problem. I just assumed BH's lower age limit was 16 but as your children were tested younger than that then that's good to know.
