Sore throat on carbimazole

Hi guys,

As I’ve said my doctor has put me on carbimazole, I’ve had doubts as wether this is the correct medication for me since talking to you all and it seems to be right as I’ve felt much worse since starting them. I’ve been on them for just over a week and the last few days my thyroid has become swollen, I’ve never had this before, it’s quite tender to touch and also my throat is a little sore inside when swallowing and talking. I think this is because I’ve had a cough and that’s making it sore, the doctor really scared me about carbimazole and sore throats. I’m sure everything’s fine and I’m just being a bit paranoid, I was considering ringing 111 as it’s saturday and I can’t get to see my go. Does any one have any advise? Thank you!

I would ring, and say you need an urgent blood test as you’re on carbimazole, better safe than sorry.

Do ring 111. Now.

Agranulocytosis can very rapidly deteriorate and cause severe problems.

Do you live with anyone? Make sure they are aware of the issues.

You are NOT being paranoid. You are neither qualified, nor experienced, nor do you have access to the appropriate tests. You must get medical assessment.

An extract from the documentation for one UK carbimazole:

4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use

Bone marrow depression including neutropenia, eosinophilia, leucopenia and agranulocytosis has been reported. Fatalities with carbimazole-induced agranulocytosis have been reported.

Rare cases of pancytopenia/aplastic anaemia and isolated thrombocytopenia have also been reported. Additionally, very rare cases of haemolytic anaemia have been reported.

Patients should always be warned about the onset of sore throats, bruising or bleeding, mouth ulcers, fever and malaise and should be instructed to stop the drug and to seek medical advice immediately. In such patients, white blood cell counts should be performed immediately, particularly where there is any clinical evidence of infection.

Ring - it’s what they are there for. At the very least it’ll put your mind at rest. 🤸🏿‍♀️🥛

Hey there BorderCollieDex

I'm a liitle late on this one, but trust you have now phoned 111 -

When I was put on Carbimazole I was told to go directly to the hospital should I develop a sore throat - you're not making a fuss, or being alarmist, just following doctors advise.

Very pleased to read that.

If you go downhill again, please don't go "Last time it was nothing..." - so easy to do.

Hey there, well just take it easy and rest, if you can.

It's a difficult time for you, and whilst we've here for you, we're aren't near enough to physically push you through the A & E front doors.

Now you know the routine. let's hope you won't need to go there again, but forewarned is forearmed and they knew you needed to be there didn't they.
