Critical illness insurance and hypothyroidism

Hi there - I need to take out critical illness cover (and some life insurance) - can anyone recommend insurers that will cover hypothyroidism (controlled)?

Advisers seem loathed to tell me who covers - especially at a reasonable price!

I'd be surprised if you'll get hypothyroidism on a critical illness policy, but you never know.

Here's Legal & General's list of illnesses covered by their critical illness policy

and this link may be useful

Thanks SeasideSusie! I’m not looking to get the Hypothyroidism covered - I’ve accepted that will likely be an exclusion! - but are there any known insurers to anyone that would at least underwrite me with Hypo?

I don't see why not. I've been hypo since my mid-20s, way back in 1975, I've moved house twice since then, both times with an endowment mortgage so I'd have had a life insurance policy for those and didn't have a problem. However, the last time was 1994 so I don't know if things have changed.

I can’t see why you would be excluded from CIC because of hypothyroidism. I would just call around and get some quotes. Hypothyroidism is not likely to be covered by any critical illness policy as it’s unlikely to be considered serious enough so it wouldn’t need to be excluded.

I have critical illness cover. But hypo isnt deemed as a critical illness. Cancer parkinsons ms mnd are . Im not sure what kind of cover you are looking for. I have these cos im self employed. Im not eligible to benefits if im off sick. I have life ins for my mortgage n another ins that covers my bills if im off. I looked into private health ins but it requires you to be stable on thyroid meds for at least a year.

Hi Foggy

The best thing for you to do is go to an Independent Financial Adviser - you can find one in your area by using this link.

They will give you a choice of the many providers who offer the cover you are looking for. As with most things in life - you get what you pay for, so when it comes to Critical Illness it is the insurers wording of the definitions ie: Cancer, Heart Attack ..... that is key.

I hope this helps.

Hello - this isn't classed as a critical illness so you shouldn't expect to be able to make a claim - its not a life threatening illness and survival will be longer than 14 days.

It may be due to my age but I have never had a problem with critical illness or life cover due to hypothyroidism. Perhaps this is new, I am now 68, was diagnosed in 1963 and took out first insurance in 1974. Changed companies a few times due to house sales/purchases. It doesn’t seem to come up in my world as much as diabetes! Good luck going forward. x
