Hello all,

I hope you are all well, or improving.

I have a question re Hashimoto's and Antibiotics. I recall reading something a while ago about people with Hashimito's having to be careful with Antihistamines and Antibiotics as they can cause flares. I may have also imagined this as my brain fog was at its height then!!.....

I have been using Metronidazole twice daily for Rosacea for a fortnight (newly prescribed) and have noticed in the last few days I have been more tired than normal and have the heavy limbs I get with creeping fatigue.

Does anyone know of whether this could be linked to the Antibiotics?

Thanks, Kate.

Here is a link which discusses this interaction at length:

Some do, some don't and it can depend upon the time interval between the thyroid meds and the antibiotic.

I’m glad I saw this, I just got azithromicin (sp?) because I have an ear infection and I’m also neutropenic (low white blood cells and immune system) so I really need it. Is it going to mess with my synthroid or cytomel? I’m also hypothyroid 😣

Well, this is not a scientific answer but I am on NDT (T4 and T3) and I have had the flu a couple of times over the last 5 years and our local village doc is a bit like a military doc, he just hands out "blister packs" of asithromicin with no questions asked. I felt so ill with the flu I didn't give thyroid meds a second thought, I just wanted relief from the flu. I took the asithromicin for the 5 days it recommends and I didn't notice any reaction with my thyroid meds. I didn't even think about it until my chest and head started to clear. Then I made a mental note that that particular antibiotic seems safe to take if you are on thyroid meds.

Apologies, I have just picked up your post.

May I share the folloing links with you as I have sufferd irreaparable harm from levofloxacin.
