I'm due to have total thyroid removal on the 8th of May my operation as been brought forward due to my levels going high I'm overactive(diagnosed with graves last Sep) I'm taking the iodine just started that today 😷 Also have vit D ampules and tablets. To be honest I'm looking forward to having this menace removed I have been ill for over 3 years with awfull symptoms it took my doctor this long to get me to a endo as he said it was the menupause after crawling in to his surgery for an emergency appointment I finally got my bloods taken that day by a new doctor who as just started at our surgery and it came back as T3 24.2 at its highest it went to 39.3 I was in thyroid storm 😡 And rushed to hospital where I spent the next ten days.
I have found that doctors and some endos have no idear about the working of the thyriod especially if it's a woman, as women we have far more hormones than men so...that's why this illness in more common in women..I recently asked my consultant why no attention is paid to the hypothalamus as this is where it starts it gives signals to produce hormones that in turn goes to the thyriod...he looked like a rabbit caught in headlights and just brushed over that question...so I got no answer to that..!! I'm sure they just want you to sit there like a good little patient and don't ask really hard questions..😂 So after my operation I will post my experience on here and I would like to thank everyone who responded to my posts

Good luck with the operation and I hope you recover speedily. I think our doctors just don't do joined up thinking. Keep asking the hard questions and don't be passive.
Good luck Birkie. I’m so glad something is finally being done to help you. I know from your past posts this has been a scary time for you and you have really suffered. Thank you I can't wait to have it removed...I know I will be hypo and if I have any trouble with it I will demand I get seen i will not wait has I have done this last 3 years with my Gp saying it's the menopause....the fool..

Thank you for your reply my only reservation is the fact I'll be hypo and need to take levo or some form of replacement hormone...my thyriod is toxic and I was so ill on the thyriod meds I could not take them,,I was taken off the contraceptive pill because I developed a blood clot on my right eye I went blind for 2 days till the blood disapated,,also I could not take HRT..so I'm hoping I can take the replacement hormone for the thyroid🙏🏻

You have a lot of different and hard issues to deal with. I did as well and I really understand how you feel. I have Graves and had a multinodular goiter. I felt the same way and had big worries about the levothyroxine and adjusting to life without a thyroid. I held onto mine for 25 years until I couldn’t anymore.
If I may offer a suggestion based on my own recent experience - for right this moment, just focus on getting through the surgery. I realized myself that you can only deal with one thing at a time - I was worried about my other health problems also and it’s just too much for one person to bear.
As it turns out, my adjustment to the levo has not been too bad. In general, it takes time for your body to adjust and you may do better than you think.
I’m not there yet so I don’t want to make it sound that it’s easy - my meds are a work in progress - but every day is better and so I have hope. There is hope for you too - it’s so much harder to recover from the surgery if you worry about too much. The worry stresses out your body and you need all of that energy for a good recovery.
I know it’s easier said than done to say this when someone has had other serious health problems like you - but I have myself - and things are working out. Hang in there - you sound like a strong person and you will get through this too. Replacing thyroxine is also not the same as HRT - they are different types of hormones.
