Whole Thyroid is the solution

Hi There,

If it's any help to you I to Levothyroxine for 4.5 years after having my Thyroid removed.

My joints swelled, my hands burned, I couldn't sleep and felt depressed. Life was difficult. After research and being told by my GP that she wouldn't prescribe NDT I changed Doctors. Almost immediately after taking Whole Thyroid (Pigs Thyroid) I began to feel human again. After experimenting and getting the dose right, changing my diet, and adding B12, Magnesium and Vitamin D I feel absolutely fantastic.

The treatment of Thyroid by the medical profession is cynical self-serving and lazy. Holistic Doctors have empathy and help with real solutions, not just more prescriptions for more drugs that don't work. Seek a solution, meditate wellness and life will change dramatically.

From what the OP has written elsewhere, she simply means an NDT. In other threads she has written "The only solution I have found is NDT" and in another when asked "I assume you mean you have switched to Natural Dessicated Thyroid/NDT /armour/erfa/thyroid-s etc etc" she responded "Yes I have changed to NDT." Elsewhere "I switched to NDT got the dose right and life is normal" plus several other references to NDT in other posts.

OK, thanks! I thought that might be some porcine version of Thyro Gold or Thyrovanz that I've never heard of...

I believe that the link posted by helvella some years ago, was misinterpreted. "If" memory serves me correct, I'm sure that I've read in other fora where New Zealand members have written that the only form of prescription NZ natural desiccated thyroid is that which is compounded, and that if they want them, they have to resort to accessing other ready-manufactured ie branded NDT products from Australia. (I hope memory isn't failing me on that, but apologies if I'm remembering it incorrectly). The previous section of the article not included in that link, clarifies it a little "Whole Thyroid Extract (or desiccated whole thyroid extract powder) is obtained from domesticated animals (usually pigs) that are used for food by humans. While thyroxine contains T4, whole thyroid contains T1, T2, T3 and T4. Whole thyroid was once a registered medicine (in New Zealand) and was widely used to treat hypothyroidism."

Sounds like "plain old" NDT all right, which used to be the standard treatment until levothyroxine was invented.

"Seek a solution, meditate wellness and life will change dramatically."

That may be your belief system but no amount of meditation will straighten my spine and undo the kyphoscoliois, or extinguish the deterioration in my spine, eliminate the RA in my hands and feet, resolve either the cardiac problem or the neurological problem that has me walking diagonally; nor did the NDT when I took it. But in any case, NDTs are not the solution for everyone even if their only problem is hypothyroidism, many don't do well on it at all.

That's interesting, is there a link between hypothyroidism and scoliosis? I was diagnosed with it after several years of back pain well before I was told I was hypo.

I've not read that there is direct correlation tbh, and often it's described as being ideopathic, but that's not to say there aren't studies out there that are joining the dots. I believe it can run in families, and certain mutated genes seem to increase the risk for inherited forms. However, many other causes are often mentioned such as a poor diet/low nutrient intake implicated in the non-inherited forms, especially magnesium deficiency or low vit D and vit K; being hypermobile; having poor posture; low oestrogen, so being post-menopausal; having too low body weight/calorie intake to sustain a healthy body mass, and being a competitive athlete can add to that; having other conditions that can appear concurrently such as connective tissue diseases, sciatic nerve pain, mitrial valve prolapse, bleeding tendencies, Down syndrome, osteoporosis, osteopenia .... So if the latter two, and in particular, the poor nutritional aspects, are associated with thyroid dysfunction, I guess there's an indirect connection there. Perhaps others might know of some research that has definitely firmed up a link between them that I'm not aware of. My own kyphoscoliosis means it curves in two planes, side to side and front to back which is fun; but I have a friend I've known for 46 years, who has no thyroid problems, who was perfectly straight when we first met, but is now very distorted. Her natural height is tall, both her daughters are over 6 ft tall, but now is only 5 ft and although slim, has to wear a size 20 top to accommodate the spinal deviation. So we can't assume though, that there is always a thyroid cause or connection.

Thank you reallyfedup123. My intention wasn't to whinge, just to make the point that we should guard against evangelising any one treatment or practice, because even if for some people, meditation for instance, does benefit them, it won't benefit everyone, or to the same degree, as them. I'm also thinking of my friend who lifelong had meditation as an intrinsic part of her life but who nevertheless died at 50 riddled with cancer.
