5 months on Levothyroxide. Help please on what the proper ranges for TSA F3 etc should be

Hello everyone

For years i struggled with my weight dispite eating healthy and doing at least an hours excersise 6 times a week. I was fit but still 'fat', suffered tiredness headaches had numerous thyroid tests always ok

Last year my mum was diagnosed with cancer i stopped exercising to travel to see her regularly put over a stone and half in weight headaches got worse terrible thirst cramps heart palpatations. Mum died and i fell apart. Went to drs who did various blood tests which came back with a TSA level of 19. Hence thyroid meds. 3 months on 50 now on 75.

Please could someone explain what the levels should be. Symptoms still of thirst headaches and tiredness. No b12 or other vitamins just fruit veg brazil nuts (only a few a day) and a craving for figs lol

Also recently started to cross train again

Many thanks for any help

No you didn't.

Just like most of us on here, your health has been messed up by NHS late diagnosis.

You can ask your doctor for print-outs of your blood tests results and they can't charge now.

Have you had any Thyroid Antibodies tested? You should really be referred to an Endocrinologist and they should have done full testing. Ask for TPO and TgAb tests, say you would like to know if you have Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

You could also ask for an Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid.

Ask for some nutrients levels to be tests too: Vitamin D, Calcium, Vitamin B12, Folate and Ferritin.

Sorry, but I meant to say -

Sorry for the loss of your Precious Mum - in my first reply. (Over-tired I think as I'm not usually awake this late). You must be devastated.

Firstly , it's advisable to avoid strenuous exercise. I've learned from this site that it can deplete T3. Best to only do gentle exercise such as walking or swimming.

Did you have any tests to check your Adrenals before you started taking your Levothyroxine?

When will you have Thyroid blood tests next? You should have another increase in dose to 100mcg if your TSH is still above 2.

Bless you thankyou for your reply. I am due another blood test next week, the dr has asked for a fasting one but never said anything about not taking my meds within 24hrs. Interesting!

Thanks again

Fasting is probably to test for diabetes, it's important to test this if you are often thirsty. You should not take thyroid hormone within a few hours of a thyroid blood test as it can affect the result, it only makes a small difference with levothyroxine.

I was tested for diabetes in December as at the beginning thats what i thought i had and was frightened but all ok. She said about cholestel due to the weight gain apparantly cholestrel and thyroid are linked??

Yes, hypothyroidism increases cholesterol levels and they come back down when the hypothyroidism is treated. Of course there are other causes of high cholesterol also.

If your taking supplements containing Biotin stop it about 5 days before blood draw. Multi Vitamin and BComplex usually have biotin

Thankyou. No supplements at present..all this is new to me so i need to figure out what if any supplements i need. I eat a balanced diet of fresh fish nuts veggies and fruit. Although i was preturbed to read about cabbage and broccoli as my fav veggies so will have to eat well cooked and in moderation.

The web pages are contradictory ref veggies so in a pickle with them so any help appreciated 😁

Why not ascorbic acid ? I read it’s most easily absorbed? Thanks

Georgie, I was diagnosed 55 years ago. I have alway eaten a wide range of vegetables both cooked and raw. I regularly eat shredded cabbage in salad. It seems to have done me no harm. I think if the raw cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower etc made up the most of your diet it may be problematic. However the choice is yours. Take care
