Hi. I’ve just received results from medichecks and would really appreciate any guidance with results.

I had thyroid check ultravit rT3.

Medical history: I have Graves’ disease - antibodies positive and >40 (range 0.5-1.0). I had RAI (2014) became hypothyroid and take 150 mcg levothyroxine daily.

Inflammation CRPhs 0.95 mg/L (range <5)

Iron ferritin 65.6 ug/L (range 13-150)

Vitamins tests

Folate - serum. 17.56 ug/L (range >3.89)

Vit B12. 67.6 pmol/L (range 37.5-188)

Vit D. 58.7 nmol/L (range 50-175)

Thyroid tests

TSH. 0.186mlU/L (range 0.27-4.2)

Free T3. 4.93 pmol/L (range 3.1-6.8)

Free thyroxine 21.7 pmol/L (range12-22)

Reverse T3. 25 ng/L (range 10-24)

FT3:rT3 ratio. 12.84 ratio (range>15)

Autoimmunity

Thyroglobulin Ab. 11.2 kU/L (range <115)

Thyroid peroxidase. <9 kU/L (range <34)

I’m seeing my endocrinologist on Thursday. I am wondering if NDT would help? Or should I be asking for T3?

I also realise I need to improve my B12 and Vit D and will get supplements if that is best way. Any recommendations appreciated.

I’ve looked up reasons for elevated rT3 and it says things like starvation - I eat a healthy mixed diet. 3 meals a day and my weight is stable and to my knowledge don’t have a major illness - other than my Graves.

Symptom wise, I have TED, which is currently causing a lot of difficulties and surgery has been suggested. I’m hoping to find alternatives. I’m very depleted in energy. I feel physically weak with brain fog and constant headache - TED related. My eyes are very sore and it feels like I have a very bad case of hay fever, but I don’t. But I also feel like I did when I was first diagnosed with Graves - anxious, on edge, unable to concentrate.

Any thoughts most welcome and much appreciated. Thank you 🙏

Hi, your TSH is suppressed which means "overactive thyroid" status. So technically you're not hypothyroid (underactive), you're hyperthyroid. I would say if you're still feeling underactive as such then you could try NDT or T3. I don't have experience with NDT, I know in the UK it is difficult to source. I take T4 and T3. I have had a total thyroidectomy and I do believe patients without thyroids should replace both thyroid hormones (the nhs have different ideas with due to costs) so I source my own. Check my profile page on this where I explain how I source my T3.

I believe you should replace your thyroid hormones the way a working thyroid would provide you with the hormones. 75% T4 levothyroxine and 25% T3 liiothyronine. 25% T3 is secreted into the bloodstream by the thyroid giving people that boost during the day. T3 goes straight into every cell too which helps your body work better. The rest we get from the T4 conversion in the liver which converts our T4 to T3. If you have absorption issues or other health issues then relying solely on that conversion can be difficult and leaving you feeling like a car without petrol.

If you start T3, start it gradually and start small. If you have any heart problems be very careful. Talk to your doctor about it all also. If you're in the UK you won't get it on the NHS and a private prescription is around £232 for T3 in the UK as the nhs only source it from one supplier (eyeroll). Whereas majority of us source an 8 month supply of T3 from Greece for as little as £38! All the best.
