Pregnant and raised TSH

Hello,

I’m looking for some advice after getting my blood test results back and having raised TSH levels. I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant and have been getting extremely tired, to the point where I’m having a conversation and fall asleep! Around 4/5pm I get freezing cold, I literally shake. My hair has started to fall out more, I’m constantly thirsty and I get very dizzy.

I had put this down to being pregnant but my GP did some blood tests and my TSH has come back 8, serum free T4 13.5 and Serum ferritin level 30.

In 2016 my TSH was 1.8.

Could this mean I have a underactive thyroid? And if this is the case is it likely the GP will treat it with the levels as they are?

Thank you for any advice

You GP should be starting you on Levothyroxine and probably referring immediately to endocrinologist too

TSH should be under 2.5 for pregnancy

What's the range on the ferritin result?

Very important to test folate, B12 and vitamin D as well

Testing both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies to see if the cause is autoimmune thyroid disease

Thank you for your reply.

The ferritin range is 12-300.

On a blood test I had last year my vitamin D was low so I have been taking supplements for that. I’m unsure if I have been tested for folate or B12 this time, will the result say this or does it come under something else? I have just read my results online at the moment and waiting to speak with the GP

Yes

Results should be listed as folate and B12

GP will do full iron panel. You can have low ferritin and high iron, so full iron panel needs testing before starting on any iron supplements

Likely you need some iron supplements

Eating liver or liver pate once a week should help improve ferritin

How low was vitamin D?

What dose of vitamin D was prescribed and were levels retested after

Local CCG guidelines

Vitamin D was 41 (range 24-167) I was given Desunin 800unit but never retested.

It doesn’t look like folate or B12 was tested. I will speak to the GP about the iron as I can’t have liver or pate while pregnant.

Thank you for your help and the information provided.

So I’ve been to the GP who has just said they will recheck my bloods in 3 weeks and to just rest.

Does this sound right as I keep reading that tsh shouldn’t be over 2.5 I’m pregnancy and could harm baby.
