Not feeling well after RAI

Last Wednesday I took the glowing RAIpill to remove my thyroid. It’s now Monday and I am still feeling nauseous and can’t tollerate heat. I am on beta blockers but my heart rate is still 100bpm average. How long does it take for your thyroid to shrink? How long is it until you feel ok again? Should I return to the doctors? Is this normal?

I have had the RAI due to having Graves’ disease and not being able to fix it using neomercazole. I have high antibodies for Hasimotos and Graves.

Appreciate some advice...

It takes weeks/months to get the full effect, it's possible you are still hyper so probably worth calling your Endo for advice.

When I had it I had no after effects at all other than being more tired but that was because I was hypo within 4 weeks.

Thanks, I didn’t think I would feel so nauseous. I will contact my Endo and see what he says.

No, I am not sure I did the right thing. I feel really rubbish and I still have a long road ahead. Nothing was really explained other than it’s the best thing to do for me. I know it will take six weeks but I hope I don’t feel this rubbish for six weeks as I have a family to look after...

Hi Nat, you have been through a major medical intervention and are bound to feel rubbish at first. There are people on here who have had RAI and done well afterwards. The thing to do now is to rest and be nice to yourself and use the site to learn what you need to know about the next steps in your treatment and interpreting blood tests so you can monitor yourself and ask the right questions to get the help you need and push for it if you have to do so. Hopefully it won’t come to that. Good luck. 🤸🏿‍♀️🥛

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I can’t wait to feel normal again.

Hi reallyfedup123, thanks for the tips. I am still feeling nauseous and it’s day 7 after my treatment, I eat a bit but I only feel worse. I was hoping I would feel better by now. I jumped on the scales this morning and I have lost 5kgs...which is great when you are trying to lose weight but I am not. I feel weak and shakey...I am not sure where to go now....
