Advice please...I'm new here

Hi all. I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 6 years ago and lately been feeling very tired and sluggish. My GP keeps telling me that I'm ok as my thyroid blood tests keep coming back as normal, and would not prescribe any medication or refer me to an endo. After reading on here about private blood tests, I took some tests and any insight will very much be appreciated.

TSH 2.09mIU/L ( 0.27-4.3)

FT4 12.8pmol/L (12-23)

FT3 3.95pmol/L (3.1 -6.8)

Anti-Thyroidperoxidase antibodies 9.0kiU/L (0-34)

Thyroxine(T4) 79.4nmol/L (66-181)

TGAB 12.6kU/L (0-115)

Vit D 69.9nmol (50-100)

Ferritin 38.2ug/l (13 - 150)

Folate 39.4nmol/L(8.83-60.8)

Active B12- 132pmol/l (25.1-165)

Should I be on any medication? Advice will be highly appreciated.

If you had a diagnosis of hypothyroidism 6 years ago, why weren't you prescribed Levo then?

Your FT4 is extremely low in range.

Your Vit D is low, recommended level is 100-150nmol.

Ferritin is low, recommended is half way through range.

Hi Seaside Susie, thanks for advice. Gp insists I’m within the range and refuses to prescribe any medication. I intend to go back to him armed with these results.

Your GP should not ignore the antibodies that indicate autoimmune thyroiditis, but I know some of them will stick their head in the sand and declare all ok when it is not. You could definitely bring this up (the Anti TPO and TGAB antibody results).

Ideally you would want to be taking thyroid hormone replacement, as the antibodies are a warning for potential thyroid cancer, besides the fact that you are dragging because of hypo metabolism due to hypothyroidism. Hypo metabolism will produce anemia, high cholesterol of the bad kind, tendon entrapment (such as carpal tunnel), and a long list of other maladies that your GP will simply want to treat one by one, instead of getting to the root cause.

I was borderline but because I was experiencing bad symptoms my doc prescribed me a low dosage of levothyroxin, I am now on 100mcg now, don't let them fob you off, get a second opinion.

Some GPs rely solely or too heavily on blood results. Mine were in the normal range after Levothyroxine but I was still having symptoms, so off we went to an Endo and I got T3. My life has changed dramatically for the better since. You need to impress upon your GP that they need to treat your symptoms and not just your blood results. Trial and error with levels and drugs. If you have an under active thyroid and you don’t have treatment, you can in the long term develop other health problems. I was untreated for 10 years! And now I have other auto immune problems. Be assertive. Also... there was an article on here just a couple of days ago about this very subject ie GPs rely on bloods and not symptoms. Try and find it. Good luck

Some doctors are human beings; unfortunately some are not; they left their hearts in an operating room somewhere. Please try and find a real doctor. Peace be with you.
