Hello,

My TPO antibodies seem to be getting higher, can anybody offer any advice?

I am currently taking 100mg Levo (T4) with 20mg Lio (T3) daily (for over a year now)

I had a blood test done this week which showed the following results -

TSH 0.48 (0.27-4.2)

fT3 6.2 (3.1-6.8)

TPO anitbodies 716 (0-60) U/ml

Anti -Thyroglobin 107 (0-60) U/ml

The last time I had antibodies tested was in Sept 2017

TPO 435 (0-60)

Thyroglobin antibody 55 (0-60)

I have Hashimotos which was diagnosed back in 2017, which was caused by glandular fever (antibody test confirmed). I got it under control however over the last 3mths I have started to feel awful again. I have been getting chest pains which I have had checked out and confirmed they are not related to heart or lungs.

It is concerning how that my antibodies are higher than what they were. I supplement vit D and B's and am going to start going gluten free again.

If it was not for

Thanks

Gary

You need vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin tested

Low iron or ferritin can cause chest pain

Many people with Hashimoto's find strictly gluten free diet is essential. Often antibodies do slowly lower when on strictly gluten free diet

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

Hi Gary

Your TPO antibodies show you have Hashimoto's Thyroid disease aka autoimmune thyroiditis.

My TPO antibodies were >1300 at diagnosis in 2017. Like you, I also had high thyroglobulin antibodies. I have since learned a lot from this site and now know that once diagnosed with Hashimoto’s with out-of-range TPO, there is no point in retesting as the level fluctuates depending on whether your thyroid has recently come under an autoimmune attack or not. It may be possible to reduce the antibodies by following a gluten-free diet but even if they fall so much as to be in range you will still have Hashimoto’s.

As SlowDragon has said, it is very important to maintain all vitamins and minerals at an optimum level so that thyroid meds can work properly.

Hope you feel better soon.

All the best

Caroline
