Opinion my doctor

Pěkný den - rád bych znal tuto zkušenost. Chovám hypotyreózu a vyšší cholesterol.

Používám Euthyrox a přírodní doplněk stravy s červenou fermentovanou rýží pro dobrý cholesterol.

můj lékař štítné žlázy mi nedávno řekl:

Když léčím štítnou žlázu - nemůže užívat cholesterol drugs současně. Doplněk na cholesterol mě schválil.

Je lékař správný?

Nice day - I would like to know this experience. I have hypothyroidism and higher cholesterol.

I use Euthyrox and a natural dietary supplement with red fermented rice for good cholesterol.

my thyroid doctor recently told me:

When I treat a thyroid gland - I can not take cholesterol drugs at the same time. The cholesterol supplement approved me.

Is the doctor right?

Sorry, I can’t help with what your doctor says. I do know that when my TSH was really low (I had a very overactive thyroid with antibodies) my cholesterol was also very low. Now that I have been treated my TSH has risen and so has my cholesterol so I think there is definitely a link between thyroid and cholesterol.

I am sure there must be people on here who are being treated for thyroid who are also being treated for cholesterol.

Your cholesterol is probably high because your T3 is low. If T3 is low, the body cannot process cholesterol properly and it builds up in the blood.

But, this is not a disease in itself, it is a symptom. High cholesterol does not cause heart attacks or strokes, it is not a problem in itself.

Your doctor is probably talking about statins. And, he is right. There are many reasons not to take statins, and being hypo is one of them.

Don't worry about your high cholesterol. When your hypo is optimally treated, your cholesterol will come down. :)

Unfortunately I am the exception to the rule. Have an under active thyroid and have also been on statins for years. I also have Afib. Took myself off statins for 6 months to see if the Levo was controlling my cholesterol but tests showed it was climbing again. Dr put me straight back on statins.

What is your T3 result when tested ? Also how much T4/Levo are you taking ? Perhaps you are under treated. 😊 A Fib can be caused by Low T3 - Low Magnesium - Low Ferritin/B12/Folate. Have you ever had Homocysteine tested ? An important marker for heart issues and strokes ...

in reply to Marz

Would hate to hi-jack someone else’s post but I take 125mg of Levo, TSH 0.029(0.27-4.20),T4(12-22) and T3(3.10-6.80) Medichecks. Take Magnesium and B12 supplements, never had homocysteine tested. I think Afib caused by 20+ year delay in diagnosing thyroid.

Sorry T4 24.1. T3 5.04

Maybe your doctor should have given you a trial of T4/T3. Levothyroxine (T4) is an inactive hormone and it has to convert to T3. T3 (liothyronine) being the only active thyroid hormone and is needed in our millions of T3 receptor cells in order to relieve our clinical symptoms. Doctors or endocrinologists seem to know few clinical symptoms and cholesterol is but one of them. The are apt to treat a 'symptom' as apart from hypothyroidism. This is an excerpt:-

Why is cholesterol dangerous?

Your doctor has probably cautioned you about cholesterol, the fatty, waxy substance that circulates in your blood. Too much of the wrong type of cholesterol can clog your arteries and put you at risk for heart disease.

High cholesterol levels can stem from your diet, especially if you eat foods high in saturated fats, like red meat and butter. Sometimes, though, your thyroid gland may be to blame. Too much or too little thyroid hormone can make your cholesterol levels swing up or down.

Here’s a look at how your thyroid affects cholesterol.

What is the thyroid gland?

Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck. It produces hormones that control metabolism. Metabolism is the process your body uses to convert food and oxygen into energy. Thyroid hormones also help the heart, brain, and other organs work normally.

The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain and directs the thyroid’s activities. When your pituitary senses that you’re low in thyroid hormone, it releases thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH directs the thyroid gland to release more hormones.

About cholesterol

Cholesterol is contained in each of your body’s cells. Your body uses it to make hormones and substances that help you digest food.

Cholesterol also circulates through your blood. It travels in the bloodstream in two types of packages, called lipoproteins:

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is good for your heart. It helps remove cholesterol from your body and protects against heart disease.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is bad for your heart. If LDL cholesterol levels are too high, the cholesterol can clog arteries and contribute to heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.

Underactive or overactive thyroid

The thyroid can produce too little or too many hormones sometimes.

A condition in which your thyroid is underactive is called hypothyroidism. When the thyroid is underactive, your whole body feels like it’s slowing down. You become tired, sluggish, cold, and achy.

You might get an underactive thyroid if you have:

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks and destroys the thyroid gland surgery to remove all or part of an overactive thyroid

radiation for cancer or an overactive thyroid thyroid inflammation (thyroiditis)

used medicines like lithium, interferon alpha, and interleukin 2

a tumor, radiation, or surgery that has damaged your pituitary gland

Hyperthyroidism is a condition that occurs when you have an overactive thyroid. When your thyroid is overactive, your body kicks into fast gear. Your heart rate speeds up, and you feel nervous and shaky.

You might get hyperthyroidism if you have:

Graves’ disease, an immune system disorder that runs in families

toxic nodular goiter, which involves lumps or nodules on the thyroid

thyroid inflammation (thyroiditis)

How does the thyroid cause cholesterol problems?

Your body needs thyroid hormones to make cholesterol and to get rid of the cholesterol it doesn’t need. When thyroid hormone levels are low (hypothyroidism), your body doesn’t break down and remove LDL cholesterol as efficiently as usual. LDL cholesterol can then build up in your blood.

Thyroid hormone levels don’t have to be very high to increase cholesterol. Even people with mildly low thyroid levels, called subclinical hypothyroidism, can have higher than normal LDL cholesterol. A study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM) found that high TSH levels alone can directly raise cholesterol levels, even if thyroid hormone levels aren’t high.

Děkujeme všem za odpovědi.

Lékař schválil přírodní doplněk stravy pro dobrý cholesterol.

Now I take B complex and magnesium and maybe I will feel better.

V praxi ale nastavit spravnou hormonální terapii a mět dobrou kvalitu života a většinu laboratorních hodnot v pořadku není vůbec jednoduché.

Translation:

Higher cholesterol is the result of hypothyroidism. Cholesterol is basically a good thing, because cholesterol results in cortisol and sex hormones. Lack of thyroid hormones violates this conversion.

So in the ideal of Euthyrox it should return the cholesterol levels to normal levels and also get rid of all other symptoms.

In practice, however, setting up proper hormone therapy and having a good quality of life, and most laboratory values in the classroom is not easy at all. I recommend writing the results of TSH, fT4 and fT3 in a new topic. Here is a well-educated community who may be a bit better acquainted with current trends in thyroid treatment than doctors, and can do well.
