Back on Levo 100 after failed Naturethroid trial

Hi

Had a trial of Naturethroid v carefully increasing dose to 2 Grains - previously on Levo 100 . But bloods and symptoms proved it to not work for me . So I’ve been back on Levo for 6.5 weeks and just had blds retested as I was thinking of trying Armour when I got back to where I was before the trial . New results

TSH 1.69. ( 0.27 - 4.2)

T4 82.4. ( 66 - 181)

Free T4. 16.8 ( 12 - 22 )

Free T3. 4.4 ( 3.1. - 6.8 )

TPO. 267. (< 34 )

TGAB. ( < 115 )

I’ve tried Levo 125 in the past and went slightly over medicated .

Any comments on these results would be appreciated . B12 and Vit D OK but need to re test Folate as the sample was haemolysed . Ferritin 255 ( 13 - 150 ) .

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. When on Levothyroxine, take last dose 24 hours prior to test, and take next dose straight after test. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

Is this how you did the test?

Your results suggest you need further dose increase

T4 is low, FT4 only mid range, should be nearer top of range, FT3 too low

What were actual B12 and vitamin D results?

Ferritin is very high. Ask GP to investigate. It may settle, but if not you need testing for hemochromatosis

verywellhealth.com/hypothyr...

Rarely, certain diseases, like hemochromatosis, can deposit abnormal substances (iron, in the case of hemochromatosis) in your pituitary gland, causing central hypothyroidism, or less commonly, your thyroid gland, causing primary hypothyroidism.

Presumably you know you have Hashimoto's confirmed by high antibodies

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps, sometimes significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first

Have you considered trying T3 in addition to Levothyroxine, if FT3 remains low once dose of Levothyroxine is increased, vitamin levels optimal and strictly gluten free

Blds done first thing - only drank water and no Levo for 24hrs

B12 101. ( 25.1 - 165 )

Vit D 90.7 ( 50 - 100)

Hadn’t considered T3 yet .

Thanks for your reply and all the links . Need to go strictly gluten free as you say ,

High Ferritin levels could be inflammation.

There have been a few posts on here recently with others on Nature Thyroid that does not seem to be working. I too am taking it and my results were in my boots. I trusted a drug from America and it looks like I may be wrong.

Well, those results show that you are still undermedicated, but if you feel good on those results. Stick with it. Most people need free T4 and free T3 about 75% of the way through the ranges, Yours are: FT4 48.00% and FT3 35.14%

Thanks for your reply. I do feel that there is definitely room for improvement. Just need to decide whether I add T3 or trial Armour 🧐

2 grains of an NDT is not a large or excessive dose. Are you sure that it seemingly not working for you wasn't because you hadn't yet reached your optimum dose?

I agree with MaisieGray, grains of NDTs are not all of the same. 2 grains of Armour NDT would be a large dose but not so naturethroid and others. Give yourself a slight increase, checking your pulse and blood pressure (BP) as you increase your dose. Keep going until you feel well but not at the expense of an increasing BP. Should your BP increase too much, drop back to your previous dose.
