Welcome to the forum

First thing is, do you have any actual blood test results? if not you will need to get hold of copies. You need to know most recent results and ranges

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

UK GP practices are supposed to offer online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need enhanced access to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up. They can no longer charge for printing out, rules changed after May 25th 2018)

How much Levothyroxine are you taking ?

What's you thyroid history? Hashimoto's, Graves, thyroidectomy or RAI?

Can you add most recent results and ranges for TSH, FT3 and FT4, plus have you also had TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested

Also extremely helpful if had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested. Add results and ranges if you have them

Low vitamins are very common and need testing and supplementing to improve before changing to and NDT or considering adding T3

Far too often people are left on inadequate dose of Levothyroxine with a TSH too high and FT3 too low

Just dosing according to TSH or TSH plus FT4 is completely inadequate

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies and also very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. When on Levothyroxine, take last dose 24 hours prior to test, and take next dose straight after test. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

If/when also on T3, or NDT make sure to take last dose 12 hours prior to test

Often just getting vitamins optimal can dramatically improve symptoms

We need good vitamin levels for ANY thyroid hormones to work

Or if you have Hashimotos then gluten free diet can be significant improvement too

Your most recent test Oct 2nd TSH of 2.03 is too high

Sept 28th test FT3 4.5 is too low

Why two tests so close together?

You need folate, B12, vitamin D and ferritin tested

Plus both TPO and TG antibodies

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

Medichecks on offer today only

Dr Toft, past president of the British Thyroid Association and leading endocrinologist, states in Pulse Magazine,

"The appropriate dose of levothyroxine is that which restores euthyroidism and serum TSH to the lower part of the reference range - 0.2-0.5mU/l.

In this case, free thyroxine is likely to be in the upper part of its reference range or even slightly elevated – 18-22pmol/l.

Most patients will feel well in that circumstance. But some need a higher dose of levothyroxine to suppress serum TSH and then the serum-free T4 concentration will be elevated at around 24-28pmol/l.

This 'exogenous subclinical hyperthyroidism' is not dangerous as long as serum T3 is unequivocally normal – that is, serum total around T3 1.7nmol/l (reference range 1.0-2.2nmol/l)."

You can obtain a copy of the articles from Thyroid UK email print it and highlight question 6 to show your doctor

 please email Dionne at

tukadmin@thyroiduk.org

Professor Toft recent article saying, T3 may be necessary for many otherwise we need high FT4 and suppressed TSH in order to have high enough FT3

SlowDragon would you say a gluten free diet is a good idea for Hypothyroidism too ? I try to eat gluten free but not always possible plus the main cook (hubby) prefers food with gluten as tastier and pasta also better ! so it's tough to be gluten free in my household (plus dairy free) Thanks :)

essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

If these are low it suggests gut is affected and therefore gluten intolerance more likely

Everyone with autoimmune thyroid disease should try strictly gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If it helps stick with it. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

It needs to be absolutely strictly gluten free to be effective

ok i will get more tests done the reason for two so close together is the gp has gave me two sets of results one was not mine and i did not notice this my results are the ones dated 28 September the October ones are not mine sorry for any confusion does this make any difference to your advise on what is low and high

TSH on September test likely too high.....not that GP will think so

FT3 is most important result and it's too low

So you need to improve conversion by having optimal vitamins. So testing vitamin levels is first step. Supplementing if necessary

If you have high thyroid antibodies then trying strictly gluten free diet (get coeliac test first before giving up gluten)

Selenium supplements can help improve conversion of FT4 to FT3

You could start these anyway, or get selenium test privately

Daily Vitamin C helps support adrenals

Only make one change or add one supplement at a time and wait at least ten days to assess
