Opinion on B12 Result

I am still in the dark searching. My B12 result was

266 ng/L. (170 - 730)

I am very forgetful and if necessary I want to supplement. Also dizzy but I have been putting that down to low blood pressure. Any advice Wld b appreciated.

Forgetfulness and dizziness are listed there so look carefully through the list and make a note of any that are appropriate to discuss with your GP. It's possible that you may need testing for B12 deficiency/Pernicious Anaemia.

If you don't have any of those symptoms listed then sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges are the supplement you need, along with a good B Complex (one containing methylfolate not folic acid) to balance all the B vitamins. But you do have a couple of the symptoms at least, so a discussion with your doctor before supplementing anything at all may be best. He should go by symptoms, not numbers.

Also get your Folate tested as it works in an important way with B12 in the body. Whilst you are asking for more testing I would also ask for Ferritin and VitD. All need to be at a good level for you to feel well and for thyroid hormones to work well in the body

Thanks for remembering about me. I didn't get the test done yet and I am glad now because I have more to include in it after your more recent post. It shld b complete this time. Phew!! A reason for my tardiness is that I am not at home (uk) but in Ireland for about a month. Will carry on from here. Thanks Marz.

Just a little aside on looking at yr profile. 1) loved Crete 40 yrs ago. Will never forget spinalonga. 2) you're the only person I know with Tarlovs cysts on sacrum. Me too. Discovered mine after MRI for bad fall I had on back. Thks again for help.

I believe it is caused by the Herpes virus ... I take Lysiene capsules when I have back ache - supposed to help. I also self inject B12 weekly sometimes twice ! - best pain reliever on the planet for me ! Happy to help

I notice on the PAS forum you say you do not have a Thyroid problem. You posted the TSH result of over 3 which tells you very little as that is a Pituitary Hormone telling the thyroid to produce T4. A TSH is around/under 2 in a healthy person I have read.

So you also need the FT4 and FT3 tested. The NHS rarely test the FT3 - which is the most important test - Sigh ! If your FT3 is low then it could also be the cause of the symptoms you mention. Also important to have anti-bodies tested - TPO & Tg to rule out Hashimotos.

Low B12 is often linked to low thyroid as stomach acid can be lowered when Hypo and of course is lower when we are older. We need good acid levels to extract the B12 molecules from food ready for its onward journey ! Sometimes other medications can affect the uptake of vitamins and minerals ...
