New member: interpreting blood test results

Using Medichecks, I have just today received my most recent blood results.

TSH 6.62 mIU/L (Reference range 0.27 - 4.20)

T4 13.900 pmol/L (Reference range 12.00 - 22.00)

These results are very similar to blood work / results received back in April 2018. I feel and have felt for a couple of years that I have (several) symptoms that could be very easily explained by a hypothyroid condition. Back in April (TSH 6.48, T4 14.4) my GP declared that my blood results were just "fine and dandy". My GP operating from the perspective that only a TSH greater than 10 warrants any consideration and action.

However, I notice that the NICE cks summary for sub-clinical hypothyroidism states:

"If TSH is between 4 and 10 mU/L and FT4 is within the normal range:- In people aged less than 65 years with symptoms suggestive of hypothyroidism, consider a trial of LT4 and assess response to treatment 3–4 months after TSH stabilises within the reference range"

I'd like to request a trial run on LT4 from my GP but feel a little awkward, possibly even a touch intimidated to do so now following on from his previous response / reaction. Would be interested to hear your thoughts / opinions. Thank you in advance.

Your results certainly suggest subclinical hypothyroidism. You have the information from the NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary. I suggest you print and tick off any signs/symptoms of hypothyroidism from ThyroidUK's list

Arm yourself with the NICE Summary, take someone assertive with you to your appointment so that you don't feel intimidated by the GP, and ask for a trial as suggested in the Summary.

If necessary see a different GP at the surgery.

I agree with Bunnyjean see another GP. The language is similar to my GP’s assertions over the year that my TFT were “plum normal”. The paternalism shine through. Drop him 😊 Good luck.
