Confused: Hey friends at last thyroxin 50 mg is... - Thyroid UK
Confused
Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (ppi) which reduces stomach acid. It also inhibits absorption of levothyroxine. Therefore if you have to take both you should take them 12 hours apart and may need an increase in levothyroxine dose.
Hi dear friend.
Good News At last !!!
This is just the beginning. 50mcg is the starting dose. You should have your blood tests repeated in approximately 6 weeks, then maybe an increase in dose to 75mcg.
Don't worry about losing the weight you havd gained - if doesn't go as quickly as it went on !!
Eat well, concentrate on eating healthily and being positive. Eat reakfast and two other meals. Fresh fruit and veg. Drink water. Only do gentle exercise such as walking or swimming.
Hope you start to feel better soon - it does take a while before feeling the benefits of the Levothyroxine .

Hi
I started on 50 mcg of Levo and after 8 weeks my temperature had gone through the roof. I went from freezing cold to feeling no cold and sweating profusely whereas I never sweated before. My pain went through the roof. My fatigue was so bad I just had to go from bed to lying down . My limbs being so heavy.I felt sick all the time and my craving for salt went to sweet.
I paid to see an endocrinologist who was dreadful and said I should decide what I wanted more of or less of. I have always thought myself to being a pendulum one lots of body symptoms to another lot but what do I do now? I really can’t keep going on like this. I was so mad at my doctor just asking for TSH after 8 weeks on thyroxine trial when I asked the nurse To test 6 thyroid markers. I really am up against everyone too. Why is this so hard can anybody help me?please
I am not medically qualified and couldn't possibly diagnose - but if you could write a post of your own with some more information more people will be in a better position to see it and comment - and maybe point you in the right direction.
One thing - Have you ever had any tests to investigate / check your Adrenal function? I understand that any Adrenal issue must be resolved before starting Levothyroxine.
Have you fully read the Patient information leaflet.
Other things to consider :
Are you on any other medication? Are you taking any supplements?
Have you had tests for the following nutrients levels :
Vitamin D, Calcium, B12 , Folate (B9) and Ferritin?
If not then ask GP for these. You may havd deficiencies that require prescribed supplements.
Never take Multivitamins or multiminerals.
Are you taking your Levothyroxine on its own with water and an hour before food. No other medication, nor supplements should be taken at the same time.
Are you able to eat a healthy balanced, varied diet? Are you able to do gentle exercise (eg walking or swimming ). Never do strenuous exercise.
Look on Thyroid UK website and search through what to do, eat, and what not to eat, take.
In your post make sure to include most recent (and previous) blood tests results - give dates of tests, results with ranges in brackets and any comments made by lab or doctor. List all of your symptoms.
We have to keep going back to the doctors. You could ask for a referal to NHS Endocrinologist.
Have you ever had an Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid (and Parathyroids ) ? You could ask for one. Have you any other medical conditions or had any other investigations?
Just some pointers that you may wish to consider.
I hope you find out what's going on and get well soon.
It does take some time to get well after starting on Levothyroxine. But your symptoms (after starting yours) are extreme - if this happened to me I would go straight back to my GP with a written list of symptoms (as you have given above).
All the best.
I am not medically qualified but it is more usual for those of us who have hypo - thyroidism to have very low stomach acid. Are the two products mentioned to reduce stomach acid?. We need stomach acid to dissolve food we eat so I do wonder about your prescriptions.
noviprax and praz25mg and I have tried to 'google' and up comes your post in Healthunlocked.
My tsh is 4.9
I start med today.i am frm pakistan.its acidity med.infact i dnt have and praz is anti depressent
Novparx - O.K. so your GP has prescribed an antacid - where it is usual for hypothyroid patients to have low acid. Due to being hypo when everythng slows down. We usually need to add acid.
The other prescription is for several symptoms and if you look within the following list you and tick off the symptoms you have and will see that the 'symptoms' can also be due to hypothyroidism.

In fact, your doctor should have checked both Free T4 and Free T3 to see if either is low, as it is probably thyroid hormones which are needed to remove these symptoms.
Nearly all of the clinical symptoms doctors 'prescribe' for may well be rectified by having a decent dose of thyroid hormone and when on an optimum dose they usually resolve.
👍
Fauzia, I am on a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) to reduce stomach acid. Some people need to be. I have suffered a lot of acid damage to various parts of my throat and my upper oesophagus (have Laryngopharyngeal Reflux as well as GORD). My PPI is Zoton (Lansoprazole ).
If you are going to take it then it must be at least two hours after your Levothyroxine. Another medicine you could try is Gaviscon Advance at night (if you take your Levothyroxine in the morning ). Definitely do not take either close to time of your Levothyroxine.
At least you have now been started on the Levothyroxine so hopefully you will start feeling better in time.xxx
Fauzia, I have also started to have Tropicana orange juice (with extra juicy bits) in the morning with my banana then again later with my porridge (my '2nd' breakfast !). I read that this helps to absorb the iron from the banana and porridge. My doctors won't treat my low Ferritin (because it is "in range"). I am unable to take iron tablets anyway due to various bowel conditions.
There is also B9 (Folic Acid) in the orange juice.
