Can anyone help.

I was called in to see my G.P last Friday regarding my PTH result. She informed me that it was 16.0 (1.6-6.9), I also have low normal calcium and vit d of 66. The lab has put Secondary hyperparathyroidism with low normal calcium, possibly due to low vit d. She is flummoxed so has referred me to an Endocrinologist. Can anyone relate to this or advise me please. I am also taking 75mcg of levo. Tia if possible!

Are you taking any vitamin D supplements? Your vitamin D is low and when on Levothyroxine we need it higher, at least above 80nmol. Around 100nmol is better

You can download calcium pro app made by the Parathyroid experts in Norman Centre in Florida

Put your own blood test data in and it will give an assessment of possible problems

What are your most recent Thyroid results and ranges.

Low vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 are all common. Have these been tested

Do you have Hashimoto's also called autoimmune thyroid disease diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies? If so are you on strictly gluten free diet?

Thank you for your response SlowDragon. My last Thyroid result was 2.71 (0.27-4.20), so G.P agreed for an increase to 75mcg. Folate and Ferritin were low last year, folate was 2.2 (4.60-18.70) and ferritin was 11 (15-300),so treated. My last folate in Feb this year was >20.0 (4.60-18.70). I don't think Ferritin has been done for some months. B12 in Mar was 378 (180.00-700.00). I stopped taking the Vit d supplement as previous G.P said it was okay to do so. G.P I saw last week said there was room for improvement so will start them again.

Yes I had high levels of TPO 1322 (<25).

I haven't started gluten free diet yet, but think I should now.

TSH should be around or just under one and FT4 towards top of range and FT3 at least half way in range. How long since dose was increased?

You may be ready for futher dose increase. 75mcg is low dose. Most people need at least 100mcg, often more

Blood should be retested around 8 weeks after each dose increase. All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. When on Levothyroxine, don't take in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

Supplementing a good vitamin B complex would improve low B12. Vitamin B12 ideally needs to be over 500

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

But if going to test privately, don't start supplements until tested

Hi again SlowDragon, only just had dose increase. G.P wants retest in 8 weeks. So you think B12 is on the lowish side? No I don't take anything for that. I am really trying to educate myself on all of this. It is a minefield!!! Thank you again.

GP sounds good if wants blood retested in 8 weeks. Far too many say wait 3 months

If you have B12 deficiency symptoms then try a good quality vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid

Hi reallyfedup123,

I have just joined a group on Facebook and they have said to look into normocalcaemic hyperparathyroidism. So will do that. No I haven't been tested for osteoporosis, do you think that maybe the endo will look into that?
