Losing eyebrows

Hi I have been on 75mg levothyroxine for almost 11 years. In the last few months I have noticed my once thick eyebrows are now almost non existant. My recent blood tests showed up in normal range. I am nearly 70 years old and also diabetic type 2. Wondered whether the eyebrow loss was an Old age thing? I do enjoy good health apart from having to take Ramipril, statins Sukkarto and thyroid meds.

Hi

Have you got your latest blood results that you can post on here?

If not see if you can obtain a copy, which you are entitled to by law.

75mcg is quite a low dosage to be on for 11 years.

Often GP will say they are in NHS range, but, that doesn’t mean they are normal that we feel well.

The experts on here will then be able to let you know if you are under medicated once you have posted results (including ranges).

Best wishes

Just looking at your previous posts you mention you have been on 100mcg for several years, not 75mcg.

Did your GP reduce your dosage from 100mcg to 75mcg.

Best wishes

If you need to take Ramipril and statins, the odds are that you are under-medicated. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are hypo symptoms. And, you really shouldn't be taking statins for all sorts of reasons.

Hi, I'm 43 and observed significant loss of eyebrows when developed hashimoto. I think it can be age related but definitely thyroid related as well. I'm on t4 and t3 meditation, feel myself again but unfortunately my eyebrows didn't grow back and had to do permanent make up. I'm also getting white eyelashes occasionally. Looking forward to hear if anybody else experienced something similar. All the best!

I’m early 50’s but my eyebrows have thinned and become paler than they were, so much so they can hardly be seen in photos. Also get occasional white eyebrow hairs now and then although (touch wood!) don’t have any grey/white hair on my head.

I was on levo and T3 for over 20 years but have been taking Thyroid S for the last 2 1/2 years.

Eyebrows seem determined to not grow back. I’ve lost my under arm hair (yippee!) in the last couple of years and hair on my calves hasn’t grown back since my first pregnancy 27 years ago.

Seems Hashimotos is doing weird things with my body hair!

Losing the outer third of the eyebrow is known as ‘hertoghe’s sign’ and is an indicator of low thyroid hormone. When doctors actually used symptoms in order to diagnose thyroid disease it was widely recognised as a clear indicator of thyroid problems. I lost the outer third of mine when I was under medicated and with use of ndt they have grown back, but probably not as copious as before.

I too have thinned eyebrows and general loss of body hair (as well as scalp). My pubic hair is almost non-existent, which I find embarrassing, but am quite pleased that I no longer have to worry too much about leg and underarm hair. Has anybody found their body hair has grown back with T3 meds? If so that may be a reason to move from Levo to T3.

I lost some of my eyebrows and eyelashes due to being hypo. I tried lots of things to help them regrow and find Rapid Lash and Rapid Brow really help. Not cheap but worth it to feel human!

It is worth asking your GP for an explanation of what he understands by normal range. What is normal in the general population, may not be relevant for what your “normal” might need to be. I saw a GP who told me that a TSH of 7.8 was normal, even though I later discovered that the laboratory had indicated that this was suboptimal treatment. Be guided by how you feel overall. Thinning eyebrows are a symptom of hypo, along with hair loss. I think it would help for you to start tracking your test results.

i am not medicated and i have subclinical sublingual hypothyroidism since young...i never had thick eyebrows ...now with age my eyebrows became thinner but still visible..i have had spells of high cholesterol..for which i went into a different diet .. i have to check on this soon...i don't eat a lot, eat many times a day, different food each time, i always ate "lean", try to sleep more and try to relax more. i hope you will be able to stay in good steady health and the most important is that you feel enough energy to go on and do what you like...check your results and have a copy of them in your hands this way you can be in control.

Time to try all the home remedies in the meantime. Rubbing raw onion seemed to grow more eyebrow hairs for me, more than the castor oil, although I do use both. I tried it on my temples as that hair thinned out just as terribly, and I have lots of rogue hair growth, very spotty but significant nonetheless.
