Parathyroid glands

Hello,

Had TT for and half years ago, been put One-Alpha (don’t know why) and Levothyroxine. Couple months after it my joints started clicking. Generally felt unwell, and it’s getting worse. Numerous visits to GP, nothing one of them things . Joints are clicking, grinding, been diagnosed with osteoarthritis On two occasions in 4 years I was tested for vitamin D and on both occasions it was low, here is couple weeks ago

Serum total 25-hydroxy vitamin D level 20.6 nmol/L He gave me invita D3 50 000U/1ML once a week, and then he took it off because One Alpha should be enough. If anyone knows anything?

I thought parathyroid glands aren`t working properlyI, persuaded him to do parathyroid hormone test and results are

Serum parathyroid hormone level 2.5 pmol/L [1.6 - 6.9]

Also I am One-Alpha (which he didn’t put on pathology forms), I think my ranges/averages should be lower than one on here.

Serum calcium level 2.48 mmol/L [2.25 - 2.55]

Serum albumin level 46 g/L [35.0 - 50.0]

Serum adjusted calcium concentration 2.42 mmol/L [2.2 - 2.6]

Serum alkaline phosphatase level 42 iu/L [30.0 - 130.0]

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

If you download

vitamin-d-pro.com

Costs £2-£3

Put your results in, it looks like primary vitamin D deficiency.

You will need substantial supplements of vitamin D to improve levels

See GP again and ask for correct treatment for vitamin D deficiency. Look up your local CCG guidelines on vitamin D deficiency

Eg Oxfordshire

oxfordshireccg.nhs.uk/profe...

This shows you will need approx 5000-7000iu daily.

I don't imagine your current dose is anything like that high

Your calcium and parathyroid levels are fine and where they should be, no parathyroid problems indicated.

Hi Vicky. You may have hyperparathyroidism . You need a series of calcium and PTH levels done on the same draw. If your calcium levels are near the top of the range PTH should be very low. Parathyroid glands switch off when there is enough calcium in the blood. You will find a wealth of info on Hyperparathyroid UK Action4change on FB . If you have a historic level for serum ca and it was much lower it could be proof your levels have risen. We are born with set points for Ca levels.

Thanks Rory17 you explained it really well. I think I had Hyperparathyroidism after TT, at some point parathyroid glands woke up and alphacalcidol was making me very ill. When I wrote this post I was very ill, I realised my GP didn't have a clue about parathyroid glands, neither did I ( he said to me I don't have them), which is not true. I have to do all research on hypoparathyroidism, what test needed doing. I was taken off alfacalcidol very abruptly as well, became very unwell with different symptoms :( I didn't know that then they should lover my dose by 0.25

But I am having symptoms of low calcium again, I have to chase them again. It's difficult isn't it? At least with my GP, who doesn't listen at all :(
