Aches in arms

Could anyone advise me of what appear to be muscular aches in my upper outer left arm and sometimes in my arm between elbow and wrist joint. I suffered for a while with a similar ache in my lower right arm (I’m right handed) and was told it was tendinitis eventually with a little treatment it improved and has albeit disappeared but now I’m getting aches in my other arm ? I have been hypothyroid for about 11 years and also have tested previously for raised anti bodies so therefore do have hashimotos I believe . I take 125 mcg Levo mon to fri 100 mcg sat and sun. Could these aches be a sign of taking too much or perhaps not enough Levo ? I am not due a blood test to check my levels until next Jan with my GP. My last results were all in the normal range and I have and do feel well other than these aches in my arm. I am 53 and menopausal too and do take the recommended supplements Vit D Selenium Magnesium etc any advise greatly appreciated thanku :)

Did you get tested for your vit D, etc. before starting to supplement? Have you had your B12 tested?

It could be that your dose of levo isn't high enough, or that you don't convert very well. Just being 'in the normal range' is not always good enough. It's where they fall in the range that counts. Do you have the actual numbers - results and ranges? If so, post them here, and let's have a look. :)

Thankyou as always for your prompt reply I don’t have my last results to hand but will seek them out and post them. Yes I was tested for Vit D B12 etc before starting to supplement my Vit D was low and was told to supplement, my B12 was within the ‘normal range’ but not towards the high end so supplemented with B12 although my GP didn’t agree with the fact that having hashis / hypothyroidism that you should be in the top end of the range !? I’m thinking about paying for bloods to be done through one of the company’s eg blue horizon think that’s the correct name as my Dr’s aren’t very forthcoming when it comes to having bloods done more than once a year when everything appeared gone only 4 months ago :( Thanks again for advice

Hi Alyson. I had the same thing- a very tender elbow and upper arm pain and almost carpal tunnel syndrome.

Nothing would touch it. Magnesium spray rubbed into my arm immediately eased it. I mean instant. (Tablets don’t seem to work as well for specific pain/areas.

But the tender elbow didn’t go away until I supplemented with b12 (injections)

It could be udnermedication too. But worth checking every avenue x

It wasn't until this past year that I began to realize that so many of my various muscle aches and joint pains were related to undermedicated thyroid. I have been diagnosed over the years with fibromyalgia and arthritis. Never really thought this was the case so refused to start some of the horrific meds sometimes prescribed for these conditions. Now I firmly believe they are definitely, for me, thyroid related. I also have been helped by diet changes though I haven't always been as strict as I should have. But now am ready and working on tightening up my food choices. Getting an effective doctor who is helping me find the right med combo has really been a motivator for me. The main reason that I finally let go of an ineffective PCP/GP is that she would only check my TSH and my T4. I did get her to check ferritin which was absolutely at the bottom of the in-range window so she thought it was fine. My breaking point with her came several months ago when after a TSH of 6 she said she didn't like to up levo til TSH's reached 12. Enough was enough. Now have a good doc who is helping. I hope you find one soon too. 😊

I have that now too and frozen shoulder pain sometimes for months. At the moment I get the same as you. When I felt optimally treated I didn't get any pains. I think it's a sign of under treatment or non conversion or could be Hashimotos. I'm trying to sort it all out too as you will also have to.

I used the medichecks company for private bloods and I think they were ok. Discounts sometimes for both companies so check it out.

Experts on here are wonderful. Good luck.

Having the same problem with shoulder and elbow. My gp said its known as golfing elbow and to get some inflammatory cream. I'm thinking of getting a massage or going to a chiropractor to see if it helps.

Best of luck with your aches and pains I go to chiro regularly and it’s a great help but do think the GP’s sometimes Palm is off without investigating problem properly of course I don’t like this getting older thing either haha :)

Perhaps it's worth a visit to the GP? I think as we get older many people suffer with aches and pains that come and go. My husband has had frozen shoulder in both shoulders, tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis... and he doesn't have a thyroid problem! I've had none of these and I do. I just have a dodgy hip to contend with unfortunately :(

It's worth checking with your doctor - best of luck x

He's fine at the moment thank you and I reckon his genes are far better than mine. I think getting older is just universally rubbish, but I guess we are lucky that at least that thyroid problems are mostly treatable - unlike the old days.

Sorry to hear you are suffering - I have part of my thyroid removed in the 80's and not medicated until about 4 years ago. High antibodies TPO.

Pain in my arms were a problem I could not lift my arms up to do my hair at times. Low ferritin and changing to T3 sorted it for me. Levo made my joints ache all over my body. Don't know if this helps. Hope you get sorted soon

Thankyou maybe the Levo is part of the problem going to get some bloods done and take it from there glad your feeling better :)

in reply to alysonkerry-

My Vit D was so low with last month's tests I am now on Vit D 50,000 IN (Rx) for 8 weeks. Also my ferritin was so low in January. Did not want to start iron supplements at the time for other reasons so started right away to ear 8 os liver every Monday without fail. I don't like it but last month had ferritin repeated. In 3 months it has gone from 48 to 102. I will continue the liver (I think of it as medicine) as I think this is a pretty good result. Want it higher though. Also my restless legs sx are much improved and I feel better in general. Just a thought.

Hello Alysonkerry,

Thanks for sharing your story, I know your pain ! I am also same age and have been taking Levo for 25 years! I have been putting off another trip to the doctors as I am treated like a hypochondriac. Having been moved to a different brand of Levo ( which was a disaster) and then put back on a lower doses of the original brand, I think I am low on meds. Last time I asked for help the doctor suggested that it was all in my head or a fun part of menopause. I live in The Netherlands so no HRT is handed out. Seeing your message inspires me to go back and ask for another set of blood tests. Every morning I get my stiff and aching body down the stairs - it gets less painful if i keep busy. But if I sit down my muscles stiffen up. My body seems to forget the yoga, gym and 10, 000 daily steps that I force myself to do. I am taking large amounts of vitamin D and Calcium everyday and I have started taking a vitamin pill for 50 plus ladies - this has not changed the aches but lessened the hot flushes.

If anyone finds a magic pill please let me know

Hi there I’ve got two bad elbows. Your gp can diagnose instantly whether it’s golfers or tennis elbow, depending on where the pain is. I have 2 x golfers although never played! There are specific exercises which help, see gp or look on Utube. You can also wear an armband to help with the pain. I bought a bandit band which helps. It can take months or years to heal. Hope this helps x
