Is joint pain in the hands a normal symptom of Hashi's?

I was diagnosed with Hashi's 6+ years ago. I know I'm under medicated and am currently working with a functional medicine doctor to correct this, as I've had trouble increasing my dose because of very low cortisol. In the last few weeks I have developed a lot of pain in the joints in my hands. The pain seems to flit between different joints in my hands quite a lot. I've never suffered with joint pain before and was wondering if this was likely due to the Hashi's or something else? Any advice would be very much appreciated :)

It could be another symptom, i.e. carpal tunnel for instance :-

You may even be able to tick off some more symptoms. I hope not but many who have hypo have no idea how many symptoms there is but we don't get all of them I'm thankful to say.

Have you had your vit D tested? Low vit d causes joint pains.

Thank you for your replies. Yes my vitamin D was 110 (50-150). I don't think it is carpal tunnel, I don't have numbness or tingling just pain in the finger joints.

OK, well, it could just be the under-medication. Symptoms are different for everyone, so difficult to say if it's a 'normal' symptom.

Yes I have severe inflammation and swelling in my finger joints. It’s been diagnosed as arthritis but that is another autoimmune disease just like hashimotos.

I’m not sure which is the course but either way it’s painful. I’m on hydroxychloroquine but not sure how long I’ll stay on it but it has helped.

You might want to go off night shade foods . They can cause inflammatory reactions in some . Take some anti inflammatory nutrients like fish oils , Bromelain . Take some enzymes with your meals .

Thanks I follow a combination of Keto / paleo so don’t really eat nightshades. I take cos liver oil with other supplements. But I’ve found triggers like alcohol can make it worse so I’m finding my diet is key to reducing symptoms.

Yes, but only half a tsp as my bowel tolerance is pretty low

Try using one of the topical magnesium oil sprays, gets round the gut issues and makes spacing meds easier as doesnt interfere with absorption.

I was diagnosed with arthritis in my thumb as i bend it you can feel it catching, then diagnosed hypo and since I got optimal it has gone, when it comes back I know its time for a blood test.

If you suffer with very dry skin and hair your body is not producing enough oil which is also needed to cushion joints. I took roacutane for acne many years ago, it blocks oil production via high dose vitamin A and one of the warnings was the temp effects on joints.

Alternatively it could be your levo, I had a severe hand joint reaction to teva. I recognised it from when i had an adverse meds reaction in my teens, started in hands, moved to feet and other joints then ended up with a lovely donut rash every where. I switched from teva and it was considerably better within 4 days

I had very bad pain in my hands last fall for the first time. I would describe it as bone pain. The pain was in my gums as well. It persisted until I took a 81 mg baby aspirin, & to my absolute astonishment it did the trick & went away. I took a additional baby aspirin for the next two days just for good measure. Talk about luck!
