Hi to everyone! I am from Greece, my daughter has TSH 9.75 ....She is 7.5 years old and she can not concentrate at school ,she has difficulties ....she walks slowly...She talked when she was 4 and we go speachtherapy for years...All doctors thought that she has delayd growth or learning disabilities (mental handicap)....do you believe that these symptoms will stop or reduce when she take the medicine ?

Has your daughter been prescribed the medicine - ? Levothyroxine/T4 . I would suggest having the following tested - B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD. Do you yourself have a thyroid problem ? I live in Crete and can see people struggling with thyroid/adrenal issues and possible VitD deficiency as people like to stay out of the sun ....

The ranges for children are different. You also need to have the FT4 and FT3 tested - sadly this is not automatically done - also the Thyroid anti-bodies TPO & Tg to rule out Hashimotos. Happy to help ....

I hear you and I am sorry you are having to fight for the correct testing. You may have to insist on the tests I have mentioned above as they are not routinely tested with IKA - only the TSH. It is worth going privately to get to the root of the problem. How much T4/Levo is your daughter taking ? It is possible she was born with a low thyroid. Do you have family members with a Thyroid problem ?

Yes my husband has hypo.....my daughter had problems and we thought that are mental problems but as she grows up she becomes cleverer but she can not concentrate at school...she gets tired easily ...she speaks slowly...she walks slowly...and we went to several doctors ...privately...and at hospitals...but they couldnt understand why she is slow ....we went to speach therapist with no results even thow we go for years.....we went to 4 auxologists......none told us to make tests for hypo..... i am very dissapointed.....

Sadly many people are disappointed with doctors today as they have to follow Guidelines. I would pay for the FULL Thyroid Testing I have mentioned above and the vitamins and minerals as LOW B12 and FOLATE and FERRITIN can cause some of your daughters symptoms. Please look at the link below and scroll down to see the Neurological signs and symptoms of B12 Deficiency.

Did you look at the other posts I posted above for you ? - they were other posts about children and the thyroid - maybe you need to read - information is power and then you can ask the right questions when next you see the Doctor. I do not see the Doctor - I go straight to the Blood Testing Clinic and tell them the tests I need or want.

If your husband is Hypo then it can follow that other family members will follow. Does he have Hashimotos ?

If your daughter has Hashimotos then giving up gluten will help her a great deal - even her concentration will improve. The Thyroid is responsible for over 300 symptoms and so you need the correct testing. Is your daughter taking medication ??

I understand that all these consultants do not sit down and connect all the information. Please have those extra tests done and then return to the Forum and start a new Post :-)

Hi Helena,

I'm sorry to year of your daughter's struggles.

My textbook has a bit about congenital hypothyroidism. I think congenital hypothyroidism may be more severe than what your daughter has. However it might give some indications of the effect of hypothyroidism on a child, and what also might hopefully improve when she gets proper treatment :-)

"Congenital hypothyroidism.

... Absence of thyroid hormones results in profound impairment of growth and cognitive development."

Ross & Wilson Anatomy and Physiology 12 Edition p232

It's good that you've found out that she has a problem because now you can help her. It's the first step. Of course she will also be having the symptoms common to adults with hypothyroidism as well.

Wishing you and your daughter well.
