BMA booklet 'Understanding Thyroid disorders' - is it still in print?

StillEverHopeful profile image

I have been trying to purchase an up-to-date copy but all seem to be second hand from 2008 and before.

On Amazon there is a 2013 Copy going for £16 (double if I want new) or a 2012 Kindle version for under £3 - which isn't great for showing GP. I have ordered the 2008 copy as I want t in print.

I even phoned BMA, but they don't have any details about their publications for the public ... just publications for members.

So I have two questions

1) I the booklet out of print?

2) How is my GP likely to react to the 2008 copy?

My copy is rather old, and I've just seen this on Dr Myhill's website

drmyhill.co.uk/wiki/Thyroid...

Please note the points made by Dr Toft appeared in his first book and are detailed below. However in more recent editions he changed his advice, so you may not find the advice he gave below in more recent versions.

So it may not be worth getting an up to date version anyway.

Have you tried your local pharmacy, that is where I bought mine. If they do have it (BMA publications are on display at mine) you can always flick through and see what he currently says and don't buy it unless it says the information you need!

Who knows how your GP will react to anything you offer him to read, some are open to discussion about these things, mine would probably throw it across the desk! You might be better just getting the Pulse article from Dionne as mentioned in my reply on your other post, pointing out to your GP that Dr Toft was president of the British Thyroid Association and leading endcrinologist (you could also drop out that he was the Queen's doctor when she was in Scotland!)

Thanks SeasideSusie,

I've emailed Dionne and joined Thyroid UK today, so am gradually collating ammo, whoops I mean information! for my next GP visit, will try to highlight specifics and provide a general picture for her. It seems I have been fortunate to have a GP provide medication at TSH 4.6 (0.3-3.5) after reading other folks problems, so hopefully she will be open to information.

I so appreciate all the help this forum provides. <3

I saw her birthday concert on the TV and thought that for 92 she is actually quite marvellous in what she is able to do. There is obviously a secret to the royals' longevity, the Queen Mother, Prince Philip, and now Prince Charles at 70 is obviously a lot healthier than I am! I want to know their secret!!!!

She is totally compos mentis. Fantastic. Never realised Charles was 70 already, good God. He is looking marvellous.

Her birthday concert was great. I watched her last night on the Queens Green Planet, something like that. I'll have what she's having please!

I think Charles is 70 in November, hasn't had the actual birthday yet as he mentioned about her having a "son in his 70th year". I just know he was born the same year as me. Yeah, I think I'd like some of what they're having as well :D

And access to good medical attention... Like that by Dr Toft!

Well, yes, but you do need money for that.

But if I were rich, I wouldn't go to Dr Toft, that's for sure!

greygoose, would you recommend a different book to use on GP?

I have no idea what book to use on a GP. No GP I've ever seen has been interested in learning.

If you are still looking for a good book regarding Thyroid I recommend Dr Barry Durrant-Peatfield - Your Thyroid and how to keep it healthy. It helped me a lot I also gave a copy to my Dr. I also went to see Dr Peatfield a great man.

Thank you so much Florie, I have got the book but was a little overwhelmed by it, when I got it a year ago (brain fog makes the digging so much harder)

I was thinking that the BMA one might be more accepted by my GP as I don't feel quick witted enough at the moment to be able to fight my corner adequately.

I will have another look at it and hope I can see it with more clarity this time. xx

I too got Dr Peatfield's book. I terrible brain fog & couldn't take it in. It's only these last few months since the brain fog has improved that I've picked it up again & understood it. Being on this forum has helped me understand it more so.
