Tirosint

Hello everybody.

I live in France and have Hashimoto.

In March 2017 our Levothyrox has been reformulated, and a lot of people suffered from side effects.

Now there will be an alternative on the market, called Tirosint , or T-Caps.

Supposedly been on the market for a few years.

I was wondering if anyone on this forum has tried it ?.

It´s supposed to have lesser side effects, then other levothyroxine drugs.

Does anyone know something about it ?

I’m in the USA and have been off and on Tirosint for three years. It’s expensive so I was trying generics which, for me, were not as effective and caused me digestive issues. So now, I’m strictly on Tirosint and my endo did a prior auth so that my insurance would cover most of the cost.

I like Tirosint very much. It is a solid gel cap with minimum incipient ingredients.

Hope this helps.

Hi milkwoman,

good thing you found something you like. I still try to optimise.

What really helped me was a liver cleanse.

I cant explain it, but since I did that, I seem to convert better. And many of my issues went away .Issues I never associated with the liver. (Like backpain, arm- shoulder pain, pain in my legs... As well as skin, and hair. My hair grows like weed now. And I´m 60.

I wonder if it is transformed in the liver.

Best thing I ever did.

Interesting about the liver cleanse. I’m waiting on results of several functional medical tests and it will be interesting to see if they find anything amiss re: liver and my digestive system. I’ve long suspected that I have malabsorption issues and once those are resolved I may also find I will require less Tirosint.

You will know it , when you do it. I felt so much better. And I´m hypo since I´m 25. At least. Never expected it. The weird thing is , that people ask me my secret now... but when I say, they turn away. It takes a bit of getting used to the idea.

Hi babsi,

Great to hear the cleanse worked for you, would you mind sharing how you did it? Was is a diet or supplements? Both?

Thanks!

babsi in reply to AnnaSo

Worse. Haha. You really have to work for it. Go on Iraisemyhealth. You get all the info you need. I have done it 3 times now, And it workes .

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to babsi

Or, AnnaSo, you go on Amazon and read the reviews of the book, Andres Moritz wrote on this subject. Then you might want to buy this book. The website` I raisemyhealth` summes it up. But you do learn more of course, by reading. I did the opposit, I did it , and then I read the book. I was too unconcentrated to read .

Am much better now. It seems to me , and others, that all health issus are getting better , when the liver ducts are unblocked, and it can function propperly.

Hi how did you do the liver cleanse please? I have all those aches too. Thank you.

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to CornishChick

Dear CornishChick and Espeegee.

Go on iraisemyhealth, or read the book by Andreas Moritz, Liver and Gallbladder flush.

It can not be explained in one mail.

I do know about the fact , that the green `stones`, that ones that float in water, may be formed in the duodenum as a result of the mix you drink.

(I have once gutted chicken, and that is what they smell like inside. Some say the green stones are formed by a chemical process, the same as making soap. These would not show up on a scan.

The green ones float, They do not have a bad smell , rather then gutting chicken.

My GP had them ananlysed, 95 % lipic acid.(Olive oil only has 70 % lipic acid, bile must have quite a bit of oil then .

However,

you also get brown stones , that are not just grease, they sink in the toilet.

They smell like very few people do, which have extremly bad breath.

The kind of smell , that is not due to bad oral hygene, but seems to come from the inside.

The brown ones get released after you took the first or second of four glasses of magnesium sulfate, so this can not be a result of the olive oil mix you take before going to bed.

Rather a product from your liver or gallblader. Magnesium sulfate has an relaxing effect, and among other, allows those bile and liver ducts to dialate.

The olive oil gives your gall blader a good reason to expell all its content in one gush. (You eat light food for a few days , so you store much of the bile as possible.

And yes ,it is a polemic issue, but I just don´t know otherwise, why I felt so good afterwards.

If you decide to do this , please make sure , that those brown stones get removed as soon as possible from your intestines. Normally you do a , yes ,colon cleanse. Before and afterwards. If you do not , all toxins caught up in those `stones`get digested again, and whatever is inside, releases back into your bloodstream. You would feel really ill afterwards, and nauseated.

I have done it 8 times now, and not only do I feel good , but people ask me what I have done. Strangers find me cheerful, relatives saw the difference immediately, and want to follow. It takes a bit of courage and the right amount of desperation.

And a few days preferably on you own.

What I need to warn you about , is that if you do not follow the procedure, especially the cleanse after this stuff is released into the colon, it is better to not do it at all!

I am sure it is quite harmful to reabsorb toxins and give them another round in your body . Whatever these are , a labtest for toxins in greaseballs is not available.

The body has a tendency to enrobe toxins in fat, to avoid further absorbation, to make them not un soluable to surrounding tissue.

Sorry this is a bit simplified, but the best I can do.

It makes sens in an holistic way.

Otherwise , why did it adress so many issues. My panic attacs , my depression, puffiness, skin, hair.... all has gotten better.

Could it be that it has an effect on T4 to T3 conversion ?

Probably.

in reply to babsi

Wow! What a great explanation. I have been told my labs show I have a fatty liver. But what really impressed me to start thinking about how to correct it was when my gallbladder operative report described what the surgeon saw when he actually got a look at my liver when he took my gallbladder out. Your feeling so much better makes sense as no one bothers talking about our liver much and since we can't do without it we should probable figure out how to cleanse it. Since whatever leaves our liver can only leave our bodies through our gastointestinal tract it probably benefits also especially re helping absorption issues. Just my opinion.

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to

I had another check since, my liver has gone back to a normal size. I still have gallstones , but very few , and they are tiny, a maximum of 4 mm in diameter. Nothing in comparison to what I expelled. Ha.

I wish I could read what your surgeon saw !

in reply to babsi

I've seen fatty livers in the O.R. it's not pretty.LOL

in reply to milkwoman

I didn't know this was available here (US) the docs never mention this. I still have digestive issues that usually kick in every morning early not long afte taking my thyroid meds (I take them around 5am). This is definitely something to think about.

superakcraig profile image

Been on Tirosent a couple of years now. I started taking it because at the time, it was the only thyroid med guaranteed to be gluten free. It's my understanding now that Synthroid is also gluten free.

Be aware it is a little more potent than normal pills because of it being a gel cap form so it is possible you may have to come down on your normal mcg dose.

Readerwriter profile image

I am on it for gluten free as well. Interesting about Synthroid! Do you have any link to that? (That it might now be gfree). Thank you! Love Tirosint but just so expensive!

Hello, I am also interested to try Tirosint. Actually, I found a source in Germany to buy it (with prescription), but I don't know if the strengths are the same Levo(Euthyrox) = Tirosint. Now I'm on 125 levo + some T3, but I'm afraid that 125mcg of Tirosint is more potent than 125 Euthyrox and I do not know what to do. What do you think?

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to adin

It could be . Caution and test is advised, whenever you change brands. Dosages can vary. Bioavailability, it varies also, depending on the fillers. Or if you take it with food. They allway do another blood test when you change. And pharmacies here are advised to not replace this drug with generics. Because levothyroxine is a drug, where a small change of dosis can make a big difference.

adin profile image
adin in reply to babsi

I not doing well on Euthyrox(brain fog, weight gain, dry skin, etc) I need something else. I tried ndt but it's too much T3 in there and my Graves symptoms return. I'll order tirosint and I will start with a lower dose(maybe 100mcg), my endo support me.

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to adin

Absolutely. Try it for a few weeks. I could not take NDT eigther, My daughter is fine with it. Another alternative is the liquid form, with also fewer additives. It´s called L Thyroxine Serb. But it is not very practical to use, since it needs to be refrigerated.

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to adin

You could try another brand. Euthyrox Merck, has a big scandal here in France, they changed the formula, without notic and warning, and many got very ill.

This change has been introduced into Switzerland allready, and most other Europeen countiers are to follow in 2019.

Not England though.

You can see it on the bypack, it would lists the ingredients . The old formula was with lactose , and the new one with mannitol.

adin profile image
adin in reply to babsi

Thanks for the info but in the meantime i switched on tirosint which seems to work better than euthyrox for me.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to babsi

Euthyrox Merck is not available in England - or the rest of the UK.

Our Teva levothyroxine already contains mannitol and already has a major reputation as being intolerable to many. Our advantage has been the availability of Wockhardt, Actavis and Mercury Pharma levothyroxine tablets which do not contain mannitol.

Cheaper it is in Italy. About 8 Euros , and it is called Tiche . Since you have the shipping costs anyway, you might as well buy it there. Mind you, this is a Suisse - Italien company , but from Switzerland they can not ship to Europe, without filling out a tax form.

Could give me this address please? I am German, and I asked in a few pharmacies. They never heard about it.

We will get it in France in Mai, I think, but it will not be reimbursed by the health insurance.

I bet it is expensive, since they have a patent, and now , with this scandal in France , there will be a lot of talk about fillers and side effects.

In the meantime I have been to Italy . Tirosint is called Tice there, and it was much less expensive then in France. Here I payed between 12 and 15 Euros a box of 30, down there it was only 8 Euros, no matter what strenght.

In case you get a chance , the pharmacie would have given me more boxes but unfortunately I did not have time to wait a day.

Hi! I was wondering if you could let me know if I could buy Tirosint in France without a prescription? Thanks so much!

Chrisandbob profile image

Hope I’m not too late to reply to this thread, but I’ve only just read it.

I am retired and live in Umbria, central Italy, and for the past two years ( ever since my thyroid was removed) I have been taking Tirosint. At first, I took Tirosint in pill form, but the chemist asked me if I wanted to try an oral solution. It seemed like a good idea as, when I looked it up on the internet, it said that Tirosint in solution would be more readily absorbed. Every little helps I thought. It doesn’t solve all my problems, but it suits me better than Eutirox ( basic levothyroxine) which I was on before.

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to Chrisandbob

Hi Chrisnbob.

It is what I heard, liquid levothiroxine is good, has hardly any fillers, and therefore a better bioavailability. How nice of your pharmacist to point that out.

Inconvenience would be the refrigeration. In case you travel you

could try the gel capsule as well.

Here in France we fight for Tirosint, or Tiche, to be covered by the health insurance.

Our french, liqid form of levo is called L-thyroxine, and only available for kids and old people , that have problems swallowing.

During the Levo crisis patients could not get it. The company could not make enough, in such short time.

Good thing you are off the Euthyrox,MERCK, because it will soon change formula.

Tirosint still, it is just`basic` T4 .

Euthyrox is the same as Levothyrox in France, made by Merck, Germany.

Just to make things complicated , the Italien Euthyrox is made in France.

People here were ready to storm the place!

Liquid levothyroxine contains quite a lot of glycerol. Not everyone can tolerate it in the quantities implied.

babsi profile image
babsi in reply to helvella

"quite a lot of glycerol`

I do not understand .

Something has to conserve- preserve- bind the levothyroxine.

To make it available , storable, needs some sort of dilluting, or an adative.

I don´t think that a few drops of glycerol, alcohol, woud do so much harm to many. You can not put levothyroxin into wellwater alone !

It needs some form of fixation.

This medication is not easy to make, and I prefer a very old form of preserve , like alcohol, to many others.

But everyone is different and I´m sure there are people, that have allergies for one or the other ingredient.

All I can say, is that, after this still ongoing scandal in France, we all did a lot of reading on this subject. And since Merck had a monopol here, beeing the oly company to sell Levothyroxin, we were basicly gaging for any other make.

We have 3 different ones now , Hennings (Sanofi), the new formula from Merck,

and Tirosint , which is not payed for.

For a few people, the ones that went to court , the the old formula with lactose, will still be sold for a short while.

This last year was hell for french Thyroid patients.

It resulted in the biggest class action lawsuit in the history of France.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to babsi

Quite a lot of glycerol = about 76% of the product in Mercury Pharma 100mcg per 5mL liquid levothyroxine.

So very much more than just a few drops. And enough to cause problems for quite a number of people.

Of course, something has to be used to make a usable product. Each possible substance could cause issues with some people. But with liquid levothyroxine the quantity of excipients is greater than with most other forms.

Chrisandbob profile image
Chrisandbob in reply to helvella

Thank you hellvella for pointing this out. I must admit I had no idea. There are tablet forms of Tirosint which might be tolerated more easily perhaps?

Chrisandbob profile image
Chrisandbob

Thank you so much babsi for giving me such a detailed and informative reply.

I realise now how lucky I am that the chemist gave me the option to try the ampoules as they do seem to be working for me at the moment. I usually don’t store them in the fridge except in high summer when the temperature is above the recommended 25’C. They are in well protected thick silver foil packaging.

I tend to put my head in the sand where medical matters are concerned... hoping things will go away, but they so rarely do!

Hope you find a solution babsi...I’ve just noticed helvella’s warning that some people can’t tolerate glycerol. It may be worth trying Tirosint tablets in that case ( assuming they don’t contain any!)

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Chrisandbob

My point about glycerol was primarily regarding liquid levothyroxine rather than Tirosint gel caps. Certainly, some people might find even Tirosint intolerable but more are unable to tolerate the larger quantity in liquid preparations.

Chrisandbob profile image
Chrisandbob in reply to helvella

In fact, I take a small plastic vial or ampoule ( flacone are greatly loved by Italians!) of Tirosint which I am sure will contain quite a substantial amount of glycerol. I’ve looked on the leaflet and it doesn’t specify exactly how much, but certainly more than a gel capsule I would imagine so anyone with an intolerance would be well advised to avoid these, as you said.

babsi profile image

Helvella , why are you talking about Mercury Pharma ? What are you talking about ?

One of the makes of liquid thyroxine in the UK is Mercury Pharma.

This product has around 76% glycerol - so a single spoonful dose would have about 3.8 grams.

Wellcome,

I have done this since January.

Be prepared for some ups and downs of symptoms , going away, coming back, but less strong.

It´s like a rollercoaster ,at times.

I feel realy good afterwards, especially just few days (2-3) later , but I can tell , after 3 weeks , I need another.

And then I prepare again.

It has become quite a routine by now. smile.
