Change of Liothyronine brand and new symptoms

Hi. My pharmacy has changed my brand of Liothyronine and I have started to experience symptoms including peripheral neuropathy pain, constipation, fatigue and carb craving. For the first time since starting T3 I am gaining weight. Until now my symptoms (and blood results) have been very stable.

Is this happening to anyone else? I'm due to have my bloods taken soon and an appointment with my endocrinologist in April. In the meantime any advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there.

What brand have you changed to?

I was given a change in liothyronine (from Mercury to Teva) and felt very poorly indeed. (As have many on this site!)

I have now refused to accept Teva, both in liothyronine and Levo and have made a yellow card complaint about Teva.

I was given Teva Levo and that caused big problems for me. Doctor was really cross about changing back to actavis or wockhart. Obviously Teva is not good must be something added. We can't all be imagining symtoms as my gp suggested!

I didn't know Wockhardt and Actavis did Liothyronine

Hi Summer, I'm just on Levo so have no idea if Actavis and Wockhart do Liothyronine. The Teva Levo made me fell bad enough!

Hi Bolton 70,

I have been on the same brand as you since Christmas. I suffer with odema anyway from when they messed me around years ago, so get restless leg, but no other changes there.

I have noticed that I find it hard to lose weight and also suffer a bit from constipation, which is very unusual for me.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention though and I will question it next time I need a prescription.

Take care :) x

Bolton70,

Tell your pharmacist you are having adverse effects on the new brand and ask for the previous brand to be dispensed in future. If the pharmacy isn't prepared to help you ask for your prescription form back and take it elsewhere.

Please make a yellow card report about the brand which is causing adverse effects yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/

I have been experiencing big problems with the foreign brands since they stopped mine in the UK. I've been made an "exceptional case" by my endo so CCG should now allow me to have the UK one back. Five weeks have gone by and I still haven't got it. Both the CCG and Department of Health are now quoting NICE to me as to why they stopped it. NICE actually say that if you have a change in brand you should have a blood test after 4 weeks as they are not all bioequivalent. if you google NICE and Liothyronine you should get the document. Take it along and show it to your GP.

Do you know where Teva comes from and where it's produced?

The Patient Information Leaflet says:

Marketing Authorisation Holder and Manufacturer TEVA UK Limited, Eastbourne. BN22 9AG.

tevauk.com/mediafile/id/424...

Which implies it is made in the UK. But if you want more certainty, contact Teva UK.

But be careful - Teva Levothyroxine in countries other than the UK might be, and often/usually is a differently formulated product.
