Took NDT for first time side effects or body getting use to it?

Morning, I been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and Endocrinologist and GP have refused to prescribe anything so self medicating.

Yesterday I took half a grain of Thyroid S in the morning an hour after breakfast.

It’s the first time for me self medicating. A few hours later I did feel a little spaced out but, that went.

After that I felt fine, in fact I felt warmer and really good.

Last night however, I am 100% sure I got no sleep as I watched the clock go by every hour.

I could feel my blood pumping round my body and my heart beating fast and my brain felt still alert if that makes sense.

My feet feel so stiff as well and I was sweating last night, something I don’t normally do and my mouth is really dry this morning.

I took my vitamins 4 hours after my NDT, and my magnesium before bed.

Is it normal? As it’s quite frightening and I can’t function without sleep.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

Yes it is frightening. I think most going over to NDT or T3 experience changes as your body gets used to it.

If it’s any help I woke up at 1.30 am last night. Sweating and heart doing about 150 bpm. It’s happened before and I’m sure it’ll happen again.

What helps me and this may sound strange. Is to take a breath and bare down as if you’re going to the loo. I hold this for a count of 5 to 7. Or if you’re a woman i guess it’s the same push down as when giving birth. But a little less painful. ☺️

If I do this a few times it seems to lower the bpm a little. I’ll leave it for a few minutes and try again. For me it drops my bpm down. It may work for you.

Thanks NickP1 for your reassurance.

Yes I'm female so will try that.

Hope you get a better nights sleep tonight.

I know it’s a little different- but I’ve been diagnosed with hasimotos too and am currently having an attack.. I have had awful insomnia the last few nights and am wondering if it’s related...

Yes sleep insomnia is related to Thyroid/Hasimoto's conditions, the pass few weeks I have had really good nights and felt refreshed in the morning.

The good times are brilliant, but then you hit bottom again, no in between.

I would guess my body is wondering what the hell is going on since I introduced NDT.

Hopefully it will settle.

Many thanks for your reply

Peanut31,

You've started on too high a dose. Try 1/2 grain in the morning for a couple of weeks and then increase by 1/4 to 1/2 grain taken at bedtime.

Hi Clutter

I'm only taking 1/2 grain in the morning for 3 weeks.

Peanut31,

My mistake. If last night was the first time you've had insomnia it may be nothing to do with taking NDT.

Don't worry clutter.

I have insomnia, but its on and off.

For two weeks now I not woken up, just last night, first night of taking NDT, I didn't sleep at all (at least I think I didn't) watched the clock every hour, minute.

Then heard the birds singing, I could hear my heart beating and blood pumping and sweating. Something must be happening with the NDT, as, I don't normally sweat and I'm freezing cold all the time.

You would do better to take your thyroid S an hour before breakfast, you'd get better absorption. Or, if you really find that difficult, take it two hours after breakfast.

Hi Greygoose

Before breakfast not ideal, but, I can do two hours after breakfast instead of one hour after breakfast.

One possibility is that your body is asking for more T3 after the first dose has worn off.

You may find it easier to take 1/4 of a tablet in the morning and 1/4 tablet just before you turn off the light before going to sleep.

Hi humanbean,

I don't understand about T3, T4, will have to look into this further now you have mentioned this.

Hi Peanuts, I've just started Thyroid S and am keen to hear how you got on. I started at 1/4 grain for a week, 1/2 grain for a 1 week, and just upped to 3/4 grain. Feeling rubbish these past 2 days. Are you feeling better? fx
