Nodules

Blood tests are normal for my thyroid- but have been told I have several nodules which should be benign, but one was 1.1cm, which I had a Fine Needle aspiration done. The consultant has said cane back nothing sinister, but can’t be 100% sure unless I have surgery!!!! He wouldn’t advise me on what route to take !!! Anybody been in this situation or have any info please let me know as I don t know what to do -

Yes I had. 1.5/2cm nodule on the left lobe. Ultrasound and FNA inconclusive so opted for surgery (diagnostic lobectomy). Result benign (follicular Adenoma). I do have Hashimoto’s and I’m currently severely hypothyroid .. still trying to get levels right. I don’t regret surgery as I had voice changes difficult swallowing and felt like I was being strangled. Always knew that following surgery my right lobe would not be able to compensate because of a Hashimoto’s. However if your thyroid is healthy then the remainder should auto compensate

Was the FNA inconclusive or benign? There is no such thing as 100% certainty, so don't let that throw you...

He started by saying the biopsy showed nothing sinister!!!

How did he end? With a little more info I should hope!

There is a big difference between the nodule being conclusively benign and one where they can't tell until they remove it. (inconclusive)

Both could be described as exhibiting nothing sinister. So did he tell you which it is?

No he said I have 3 options- forget about it completely, monitor it or surgery....

In order to make an informed decision you really need to know if the biopsy came back benign or undetermined. Undetermined usually carries a 30% risk of cancer whereas benign much less chance.

Ask your consultant what the FNA result was as there are stagings to indicate whether the result is benign, inconclusive or malignant. If the consultant won't advise which route to take ask whether there is another consultant you can discuss your options with.
