Can't lose weight help!!!!

Hiya I'm not actually posting for myself but my mom. She has an under active thyroid controlled by medication. My question is, do any of you have problems losing weight? My mom has been on slimming world for months now. She lost wright at first but now maintains week in, week out. I hate seeing her so down heartened, especially when she follows the plan so rigidly. She spoke to the doctor and he just told her, he would like to lose weight to, sometimes you just can't and to basically deal with it. Have any of you tried slimming world or any other diet and had the same problem. Are there any foods that could be effecting the thyroid medication? If you could get back to me with a reply, it would be great xxc

Hi you can amend your post by clicking 'more' at the bottom of it and 'edit'. You can also lock your posts and replies for more privacy by clicking on 'community only' when you post instead of 'everyone'. If you don't do this then the whole of your post and all the replies could appear anywhere on the web. When it is locked a little padlock appears next to it.

Sorry I can't help with the weight issues but there is a good weight loss site on here if you go into browse communities. They should be able to help. x

Hello loubian does your mum have copies or can she obtain her results for thyroid blood tests done in the past and current one? If so it's very useful to give a bigger picture of what may be happening perhaps her thyroid is not as well controlled as she has been told? Many of us find weight very hard to shift but optimal treatment does seem to help many people shed the weight.certainly in my own case once on enough thyroxine to help my excess 1 stone went away pretty quickly.

Losing weight can be tough when Hypo. Try to find her results with ranges - you are legally entitled to have them from the Surgery - you should be able to access them on-line in the UK. Tell us her dose too. When you have the results - post them here in a new thread so more people will see them :-)

Often the NHS will not do the thorough testing to show up issues - ummm ! Is your Mum able to have Private Testing done through Thyroid UK ? Kits sent to your home and results by e-mail - that way you will find out the FULL story and people here will help. Let me know and I will post the link for you :-)

I have recently lost weight with whole30.com

For full Thyroid evaluation you mum needs TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies. Plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12.

Essential to test thyroid antibodies plus vitamins

First thing is do you have any actual blood test if not will need to get hold of copies

UK GP practices are supposed to offer online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is may need enhanced access to see blood test results. In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up. They can make nominal charge for printing but many will do so for free (£10 max)

Private tests are available

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease). About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's, important to know cause as it influences treatment

It could be that she's on too lower dose of medication. Has she had her ft3 tested?
