I’m new here so here is a bit about myself.

77 years old, suffered from low red blood cell count for several years. Had minor heart attack 4 years ago. Had emergency full Ileostomy surgery to remove cancerous polyp 8 months ago, was in hospital nearly 5 weeks due to wound becoming infected also remaining digestive system to was slow to restart. Wound has not yet healed and is still 12cm up and down by 6cm wide. Initially was 20 X 10 and 3.5 deep. Currently silver dressing being checked twice a week.

Dave ,this is a site for thyroid patients but you do not mention whether you have thyroid issues.

Hi Treepie, I had not realised this site was for thyroid patients. I found the site whilst researching Vit D related to wound healing. Sorry if I have caused anybody any confusion as I don't think I hove thyroid problems

Sorry but no. I had not realised this was a thyroid problem site. My main concern is Surgical Wound Healing.

Hi, Everyone heals (wounds, etc.) at their own individual rate. For example you may know someone who was up & about after giving birth & some else who did not want to crawl out bed weeks after giving birth. How fast have you healed in the past? As you age & rack up illnesses your earlier rate will likely slow. Most surgeons (in the states at least) choose a smart nurse to work for them. These more specialized nurses become well versed in fielding surgical questions like wound healing. Always go with your gut feelings, if you don't think your wound healing is progressing properly do whatever it takes to get your wound evaluated.

Dont worry Davegrowler , we all make mistakes If you're concerned it would be best to ask GP to test your Vit D levels.

Also ask him to test your Vit B12 as low levels can inhibit healing and surgery often wipes out B12. Sometimes B12 deficiency does not show up on blood tests but doctors don't realise. It would probably help you to take some lozenges or put on some B12 patches for a while. If I were to have surgery I would definaltly take B12 after and I think it is recommended following stomach surgery especially. Have a look at Dr Chandys B12 support group on line.
