Thyroid peripheral neuropathy?

Merry Christmas everyone!

I have been on armour thyroid and thyroxine for twenty years and this has managed to support me through a lot of traumatic life events, namely 7 knee operations in 9 years, including two knee replacements. My Mum die in late 2015 and a few months after this I started to get tingling and numbness around my lips and neck pain. The dental hospital did many tests including a brain scan and think it is thyroid peripheral neuropathy and also probably to do with cervical spondylosis i.e. neck arthritis.

Has anyone on here experienced this? The doctor at the hospital said peripheral neuropathy happens when a person is not diagnosed with hypothyroidism for a long time-which is true in my case!

Also, thank you very much diogenes for your latest research!!!

Am sure you have checked your B12 levels ... it needs to be over 500 to prevent neurological symptoms including peripheral neuropathy. Sadly rarely on the radar of many Docs :-)

JanJan2,

Has calcium been checked? Numbness around mouth and nose may be due to calcium deficiency.

Hi Clutter,

Have also had calcium level checked recently and it was good.

PN can be due to hypo and also pernicious anaemia. I have cervical spondylosis too, and was warned that progression could pinch nerves and cause neuropathy. It's difficult to determine the cause of new symptoms with all these candidates. As Marz says, it's a good idea to ensure B12 is high enough to avoid neurological problems.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, the dental hospital also think it could be due to cervical spondylosis. My osteopath thinks it may be a trapped nerve.
