Hi Palberts,

TSH is low-normal but not suppressed. I was advised to keep TSH suppressed <0.1 after thyCa. FT4 is just over halfway through range which is about average for someone taking Levothyroxine only.

Is there any way you can get a blood test for Free T3? Thyroidectomised patients often find it difficult to convert sufficient FT3 on Levothyroxine only. I was very unwell on doses between 200mcg - 100mcg and only felt well when Liothyronine (T3) was added to Levothyroxine.

I was told the t3 uptake is the free t3....is there another test to request?

Palberts01,

They're different tests as far as I'm aware. I've no idea what your T3 Uptake result means.

Here is the definition..left me know if it is a different test..I will be sure to,get thus one next time

Tri iodothyronine (T3) Uptake Thyroid Blood Test. Why is this test important? T3 uptake is an indirect measure of the quantity of thyroxine binding proteins (thyroid binding prealbumin, albumin, and TBG) in plasma. It is directly proportional to the degree of saturation of the binding proteins by thyroxine.

Palberts01,

It is a different test. Free T3 is unbound to proteins and is the amount of T3 available to cells.

Palberts01,

Perhaps one of the American fora can interpret the T3 Uptake test result. Try Dana Trentini hypothyroidmom.com or Mary Shomon or stopthethyroidmadness.com

It will give you a link from TUK and it explains why Free T4 and Free T3 are necessary. Dr Toft, who was President of the BTA and is physician to Queen Elizabeth when she's in Scotland.

Give a copy to your doctor and the Endocrinologist.

Your FT4 isn't high so I'd assume your FT3 isn't optimal. T4 is inactive and T3 is Active and is the only hormone needed in our T3 receptor cells.

(I am not medically qualified but had undiagnosed hypothyroidism).

Thank you... everything I've read AZ said natural thyroid is the way to go but my doctor is so against it and there's not that many doctors here that take care of people with thyroid cancer I'll try again
