Welcome to the forum, Viki6655.

Thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies are positive for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine treatment is for the low thyroid levels it eventually causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.

Have you had TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested?

TSH 5.68 (0.2 - 4.2)

FT4 13.9 (12 - 22)

FT3 3.4 (3.1 - 6.8)

Diagnosed 2012 taking 25mcg levo, reduced from 150mcg levo based on TSH 0.02 (0.2 - 4.2) FT4 20.4 (12 - 22) FT3 4.1 (3.1 - 6.8) thankyou

Vikki6655,

Who reduced dose, GP or endo and how long ago?

You are undermedicated to have TSH 5.68 and FT4 and FT3 low in range and should request a dose increase.

The goal of Levothyroxine is to restore the patient to euthyroid status. For most patients that will be when TSH is 0.3 - 1.0 with FT4 in the upper range. FT4 needs to be in the upper range in order that sufficient T3 is converted. Read Treatment Options in thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... Email dionne.fulcher@thyroiduk.org if you would like a copy of the Pulse article to show your GP.

Vikki6655,

Consider making a complaint to the head of endocrinology. FT4 and FT3 were within range so despite suppressed TSH you were not overmedicated. If your endo is convinced suppressed TSH = overmedication the correct treatment would be a dose reduction of 25mcg and retest after 6 weeks to check levels. Swingeing reductions of 125mcg should not be made.

Thankyou the endo was ok about the suppressed TSH before so I don't know why he changed his mind

Vikki6655,

Well he's now made you very undermedicated. It's unlikely you'll be able to get an immediate endo appointment so see your GP ASAP.

Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune disease. Once we have one, we are more likely to get another

Your high TPO and TG antibodies suggest you have Hashimoto's. As Clutter says. Post you TSH, FT4 and FT3 results and ranges

Also have you had vitamin D, ferritin and folate tested recently. These are often too low.

Hashimoto's affects the gut and leads to low vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels stop Thyroid hormone working

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Make urgent appointment with GP and ask for vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 to be tested

Strongly suspect they will be dire

As you have Hashimoto's you really need to consider trying strictly gluten free diet in addition to improving low vitamins and getting Levo dose correct
