Ultrasound?

Just wondering if its worth having an ultrasound, even if no obvious sign of goitre/nodules? I have hashimotos, dx in 2014. My Dr has never mentioned having one & has only ever felt my neck for nodules.

I have been wondering the very same thing I was dx with hashis in 2013 and neither my dr, or 2 private endos (1 in harley St, 1 local) have suggested it. I will be interested to see what others comment on here

Minniemuffinmoo,

If your doctor hasn't detected any swelling or nodules why do you want to have an ultrasound scan?

Clutter, I have heard that sometimes they may be hard to detect by touch. I can't feel anything myself but just wondering how many have had ultrasounds where nodules were discovered, but not felt before.

Minniemuffinmoo,

Most adults have one or two nodules. It is very unusual that anyone dies without having at least a couple of thyroid nodules.

If nodules are not palpable they are usually very small and nodules <1cm are rarely malignant. <1cm is likely to be too small to fine needle aspirate biopsy with any degree of accuracy.

Thank you Clutter. That puts things in to perspective a little more 👍

I have had ultrasound done, Endo checked my thyroid and neck area and said no scan even though i was sure of nodules and swelling as i could feel them but gp requested the ultrasound as he could feel lumps, so ive had it done and i do have nodules and a thickening of the isthmus-i too have hashis. I think my doctor who was a registrar was inexperienced and i now have a consultant to see in a couple of weeks to see.😊

I've just had an ultrasound on Monday. My doctor requested one although I don't have any swelling although I had been having neckaches. It was all fine I'm glad to say. I think she tends towards referring as she says about referring to an endo every time I see her. Plus friend says she keeps doing it about a different health issue. I resisted at first as I wanted to increase my thyroxine, which I've done twice. Caved in now so seeing one soon which I'm apprehensive about.
