Hi I spoke to different GP today and he has confirmed I have Hashimotos and that the diagnosis given by the other GP was wrong. He has advised me to complain to practice manager and I plan to do this in writing. The GP I saw today has prescribed me 50mcg Levothyroxine to take once a day and be retested for thyroid 6-8 weeks afer. Re my vitamin and mineral levels, he has prescribed me iron tablets to take 3 times a day and folic acid 5mg to take once a day, also loading dose of vitamin D and I am to contiue receiving B12 injections, next one due in 2 weeks and I have been asked to collect ampoules from my chemist. I am being checked for coeliac disease and h pylori as well.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

Sounds like a great result.

Always take Levo on empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after.

Many take on waking, but it may be more convenient and possibly more effective taken at bedtime

Different brands of Levo suit different people. It's a bit trial and error to see if you get on with first one you get.

Many people find Levothyroxine brands are not interchangeable. Once you find a brand that suits you, best to make sure to only get that one at each prescription.

Read about why it's good idea to also take magnesium and Vitamin K2 when on vitamin D supplements.

Also read as much as possible about Hashimoto's.

Very very many of us find strictly gluten free diet helps, regardless of coeliac test results. Obviously you will need to keep eating gluten until endoscopy. Hopefully you shouldn't have to wait more that 6 weeks.

Selenium supplements can help too

The fact this GP suggested you should complain to practice manager means genuinely appalled and/or fed up with picking up pieces after an incompetent GP

Thanks SlowDragon. Yes I used to take magnesium spray very briefly and it made a difference except that it kept leaving an oily residue on my skin so I stopped using it. Will look for K2.

Calm vitality magnesium powder is cheap and easy to use. Tastes ok too. Must be minimum of four hours away from taking Levo

Most usually take levo when they get up with one full glass of water and wait about an hour before eating. Food interferes with the uptake of the hormones.

As stated above, some prefer bedtime dose, in that case if you had meal containing protein to eat you should allow about 3 hours after it before you take levo, as above with one full glass of water. As our digestion has usually slowed down due to hypo, means food takes longer to digest and some doctors prescribe antacids, when we should be taking a digestive enzyme as it is usual for us to have low acid rather than high but symptoms are so similar the doctor prescribes for high acid.

If you do bedtime dosing, you'd have to miss this dose if having a blood test next day, which should be the earliest and fasting (you can drink water) you would then take it after the blood test and bedtime as usual the same day.

Lux2014,

That's excellent. Stick with this GP who knows what he is doing.

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements, magnesium and oestrogen.

It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the dose. Symptoms may lag behind good biochemistry by several months.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.

Taking each iron tablet with 1,000mg vitamin C will aid absorption and minimise constipation. Take it 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

Congratulations, you have managed to find a GP who knows what he is talking about. Interesting that he has suggested you talk to the practice manager. It seems he is angry about the previous GP misdiagnosing you.
