Acne type spots

Hi everyone... I started loading dose of b12 injections about about 6 weeks ago. After a few injections I started to get acne type spots on my face. Originally put these down to change of make up and haven't used this for a month. New spots still appearing and dr prescribed hydrocortisone cream to help. I am not feeling much of a difference since starting injections and in fact off work at moment with stress ....feeling low and cry very easily . Has anyone else had this type of reaction or is it something else?

Hi Marianjones54, don't worry this is common. I have PA and have to self-inject, and the return of teenage acne is an unwelcome effect. It does indicate that you are metabolising B12, so you could take it as a positive sign.

I don't inject B12, I take high-dose tablets.

When I started taking the B12 I developed lots of spots. But I persisted, and over the course of about three months they got worse and worse then better and better. By the end of three months my skin was completely spot free and looking better than it had done for years.

Unfortunately, if I try to reduce my very high dose I start getting spots again really badly. My serum B12 level is very, very high.

Hi, I too have had problems with acne suddenly appearing, ive had b12 boosters followed by thyroxine prescribed which is when it started, I can understand the frustration! Took to the Internet in search of lotions an potions, came across an article stating salicylic acid is beneficial for acne, can be found in certain highstreet products, I bought l'oreal new pure clay scrub only been using it for 5 days yet my skin looks an feels so much better. Our skin is all different of course but it may help you too?

Oh thanks fir that ..I will go in search of it tomorrow ...dr prescribed hydrocortisone cream which I have been using ..think it helped a little but new spots or bumps seem to appear regularly ...

Yea started around hairline then few on cheeks latest bumps and spots on chin

That's where mine are. I started methyl b12 nearly 2 years ago and that's when they started. Haven't stopped. Maybe I need to stop b12

Methyl B12? I am hoping I will wake up one of these days and spots will have disappeared ! I will keep on using prescribed cream at least for a while and also take on board any advice offered here .

Vitamin B12 comes in several different forms :

1) Cyanocobalamin (also referred to as Cyano-B12).

This is the form of B12 found in many of the cheaper multivitamin pills. It is also the form usually used in injections in the US.

2) Hydroxocobalamin (Hydroxo-B12). This is the form usually used in injections in the UK. Can also be found as a pill or in liquid form, but is not manufactured by many companies. It is expensive when in pill or liquid form.

3) Methylcobalamin (Methyl-B12). This is one of the active forms of B12. Both the cyano and hydroxo forms have to be converted into one of the active forms before the body can use it. Methyl-B12 is more expensive than the cyano form, I'm not sure about the hydroxo form. Methyl-B12 is available in pill and liquid form, and also sometimes used in injectable form.

4) Adenosylcobalamin (Adenosyl-B12 or Dibencozide or cobamamide). This is the other active form of B12. It is available as a supplement in pill form. I have no idea if this comes in an injectable form.

Note that some forms of B12 - but I'm not sure which - come in the form of nasal sprays and patches.

Different people do well on different forms of B12 and some may take more than one kind.

Ooh, difficult. I don't know if there is a good answer.

In your shoes I might be tempted to try cyanocobalamin or hydroxocobalamin. But I would recommend asking the people on the Pernicious Anaemia Forum first, because they know far more about B12 in all its forms than I do :
