Please attend if you can!

News from Scottish Petition Scotland:

So the good news is that Elaine Smith MSP has worked tirelessly to secure a debate in the Scottish Parliament and that debate is scheduled for Wednesday 22nd November, most likely early evening around 5.30pm but I will confirm nearer the time. It would be so useful if any thyroid patients in Scotland could attend and if you could lobby your MSP to sign the motion,

attend the debate and even speak up for you at it! Elaine has pushed for us over the five years of the petition but she can't do it all alone. Please come along if you possibly can. See Below

Motion for debate:

Motion S5M-07373: Elaine Smith, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour

Date Lodged: 30/08/2017

Thyroid Patients Deserve Fair Treatment

That the Parliament notes petition PE 01463, which has been under consideration by the Public Petitions Committee since 2012 and highlights the problems with inadequate diagnosis and treatment of thyroid conditions; understands that at least 2% of the population will suffer from hypothyroidism in their lifetime, with some doctors believing that the rate is much higher; recognises that the chronic condition affects mainly women (95%); accepts that, in the 1980s, the standard treatment of Dessicated Thyroid Hormone (DTH) was replaced by synthetic thyroxine (T4); notes that T4 is a prohormone that must be converted to T3 (liothyronine), which is the biologically active hormone; understands that the Royal College of Physicians officially recognises that 5 to 10% of patients on T4 do not do well, a figure believed to be substantially higher by others in the thyroid field; takes account of the fact that many patients are wholly reliant on T3 or combination therapy for health and wellbeing; expresses concern that some health boards, including NHS Lanarkshire, are, it believes, issuing controversial guidelines that imply that GPs can no longer prescribe T3; considers any such instruction to be a breach of their duty of care to those relying on T3 to live, discriminatory in terms of gender and potentially in breach of Article 2 and Article 14 Protocol 12 of the European Convention on Human Rights, and notes calls for health boards to ensure that patients continue to receive T3.

That's taken a long time and I think most of us would like to be present except we don't live in Scotland.

I hope those who do can find time to support the Petition.

Have booked my tickets and have already been in contact with my MSP, Jackie Baillie, who supports the motion. Will see her again on Friday to update her on the BTA position and TUK response to NICE consultation. My hubby is going too.

Is there any feedback from this? Any conclusions reached? Thanks

lynmynottPartnerThyroid UK in reply to Catseyes235

The conclusion was that they are waiting for the report from the Petitions Committee and Minister Campbell did agree to meet with Elaine Smith MSP and Lorraine Cleaver to explore the issues raised. The minister also said that there was no question of T3 being withdrawn in Scotland. However, we know that individual health boards are still refusing to prescribe T3 due to cost and removing prescriptions from patients who were stable on it.

Is it that expensive compared to other medicines? There has just been the overpricing of thyroxine. Did this have any influence on attempts to save money on T3?
