Vitamin D supplement

Hi

I have received a letter from my endo advising me that according to blood tests I am on the correct dose of thyroxine and my calcium and kidney tests are normal. It goes on to say that I have raised antithyroid antibodies that fit with my thyroid being under active and my Vit D levels are mildly low. She suggests I take an over the counter supplement rather than high dose supplements. Can anyone recommend which Vit D supplement I should take.

She hasn’t given me any levels but I shall ask for these when I see her next month.

You might want to look at SeasideSusie's suggestions here to someone with a 'mild' deficiency level (scroll down): healthunlocked.com/thyroidu......

Ali8655,

Your endo has been unhelpfully vague by not saying what mildly low is or what dose to take. I think it won't hurt to take 5,000iu D3 daily until you get your results. VitD should be taken 4 hours away from Levothyroxine. I prefer softgel capsules to tablets as the oil aids absorption. If you buy on Amazon please use the affiliate link healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Raised thyroid peroxidase antibodies are positive for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.

Thank you Clutter. I agree the endo wasn’t helpful and I shall definitely ask for my results. Mainly because I’m feeling well at the moment so would like to keep as close to these levels as possible.

I didn’t realise that you could order from Amazon through Thyroid Uk therefore supporting the charity. I order a lot from Amazin and will definitely be doing it through Thyroid UK.

Ali8655,

That's great, thank you.

You possibly need to also test ferritin, B12 and Folate. These are often too low as well

Thanks SlowDragon. I’m already on B12 injections and had a course of folate at the beginning of the year. Must admit that was only after I’d thrown a bit of a paddy with the doctor after private blood tests showed I was low.
