Carbimazole in pregnancy

Hi All,

I am really struggling to enjoy my pregnancy as I can't shake the idea that something could be wrong with my baby because of my Graves' disease/carbimazole treatment.

I am hoping somebody here might be able to reassure me that they were treated with Carbimazole yet managed to have beautiful healthy babies?

Thanks in advance,

Jojo

Hi Jojo

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in my first pregnancy around 8 weeks. My levels were so high that the doctors warned us of miscarriage. I was quickly put onto PTU and labetalol for the symptoms. I spent the next 7 months feeling unwell and pretty much on bed rest but my baby daughter was born at full term with no complications. She is now nearly 5 and is a very healthy child.

When I fell pregnant with my second it wasn’t so planned and I was still taking carbimazole at the time of conception and up until around 8 weeks when I discovered I was pregnant. I worried that this would have caused harm to my baby as I shouldn’t have conceived whilst taking carbimazole. Thankfully I switched to PTU again and felt much better than my first pregnancy. My son was born at full term with no complications and aside from some reflux & milk allergy problems, he too has been healthy. He is nearly 3 years now.

I remember the worry throughout the pregnancies. Not only do you have the normal expecting mum concerns, but you have a illness to contend with on top. Everyone is different but I wanted to share with you my experience as I worried too and was lucky my babies were both fine. I wish you the same.

Have you been put into PTU or another more pregnancy safe medication to control your graves?

Best wishes

X

A friend of mine was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism shortly after she became pregnant. In the beginning she was being treated with Ptu but it wasn't working so they switched her to carbimazole. Her daughter is a year old now. She's a happy, healthy little lady.

I hope that puts your mind somewhat at ease. Congrats on your pregnancy!
