Ive recently been diagnosed with under active thyroid after a couple of months of chronic fatigue! I suffer with a few other health issues including nerve damage (mainly spine & leg/feet) sciatica and arthritis. I wasn't sure if my meds were making me more tired than usual but thought it wouldn't be likely as they had not changed for at least 2 years. My gp requested bloods and they came back as abnormal, vit D is severely low, iron is low and thyroid is under active. I've started on vitD supplement 800u x twice a day and levothyroxine 50mg. I'm only on day 3 of these.
I'm trying to research as much as possible about the condition so I know what to expect. If anyone would like to share with me anything that you were told/found out, I would very much appreciate it.

It's extremely common for GP to only prescribe 800iu which is far too little.
Good you have started on 50mcgs Levothyroxine
Always take Levo on empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after. Many take on waking, but it may be more convenient and possibly more effective taken at bedtime
Many people find Levothyroxine brands are not interchangeable. Once you find a brand that suits you, best to make sure to only get that one at each prescription.
You should have repeat blood test in 6 weeks to check levels. Likely dose may need to be increased by 25mcg steps, always repeating blood tests each time
All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and if taking Levo don't take it in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after.
Hi thanks for your reply. I haven't actually got the copy of my results and it's not on my file online, would it be an idea to request this? Maybe someone will be able to understand it all I haven't got a clue but this is a new learning curve!
I take the levothyroxine 1st thing in the morning but now you said about bedtime, that would suit me better as it's one less thing to think about (not eating/drinking)
I know the gp said my folate serum is low and I was to increase the amount of veg I eat. I follow slimming world and I'm always eating veg, lots of greenery also. My plate is half full of it all so can't really understand that one
I'm really not sure 100% what was requested 're my bloods bit I'm going to ask for a print out of my results. Oh no I'm sorry to hear that, was you aware of anything going on or how did you find out? Tsh is that the thyroid level? Sorry to sound thick
i was ignorant and believed that when doctor said my conditions would improve they really would. i should have done antibodies privately once diagnosed or at least when nothing improved after 2 or 6 months. if i knew 2 yrs ago it was hashimotos id probably start gluten free diet and vitamins supplementation in time.
tsh is just the stimulating hormone and it changes a way too often. to make sure you are aware what youre dealing with you need tsh, ft4, ft4 and vitamins tests.
i hope you can get a copy of your results soon. you may post them here to discuss as many people here have great knowledge while many doctors only care if results are in range or not.
