Advice on iron supplements please.

Hi Everyone,

I am hoping to get some advice on taking iron supplements please. I am recently diagnosed as having Hashimoto's disease and have just been on Levothyroxine for about 6 weeks. I am a bit worried about my symptoms.

In March this year I had severe iron deficiency anaemia and started taking iron supplements. My last ferritin test was in July the result of this was:

Serum ferritin level 46.6 ug/L 13.00 - 150.00

The Gp has never done a full iron panel and really I can't afford too much private testing. My question really is should I start taking iron supplements again without knowing my levels. I am getting daily headaches now which could be low iron. I do have some Gentle Iron 20mg was just wondering if this is ok to take. Thanks so much for any advice offered.

Hi carmel, my ferritin levels are quite dire aswell and its a shame that doctors do jot about it! I cant advice really as im relativley new to this, im hyper with hashis and i noticed you have some gentle iron, i also take solgars gentle iron 20mgs, ive been taking them for a good 2 months but need to get my bloods done again for iron levels, i think it would take ages to build up ferritin on our dose and i think i would like something higher in dose. I also raise mine by eating lambs liver and dark green veggies, a good plate full once a week.

There are lots of people who can advise you better on this forum and tell you what dosage would be best for you. Seaside susie seems to be the one who people turn too. If you dont get a response send your post again-good luck.x☺

Hi Rmichelle,

Thanks for your reply. Your right the GP's don't really care once the levels are in the "normal range". I was on the ferrous fumarate that the GP prescribed but they have awful side effects. I do find the Gentle Iron better.

I need to look into some recipes that use liver as I can't just eat it on it's own as hate the taste. Maybe I could put it in a casserole or something. I will have a look at Seaside susie's posts and see if I can find something. Thank you for replying and good luck to you too. x

I have been taking desiccated liver for quite some time and it has done wonders for my iron levels. It also contains vitamin A which is good as my vit A levels were borderline low last time I had them checked. I hate the taste of liver so could never actually eat it, which is why desiccated liver capsules are great for me. They are also inexpensive compared to many other products I have used in the past.
