All guys im back from my 1st endoc appointment and was expecting more but i dont know what the more was. Im hyper as you know with recently diagnosed hashi's aswell.

Endo was very basic asked alit of general health questions and asked how i was feeling but just felt as it was just procedure but moved on very swiftly , he asked "so what do you know about the thyroid the" so i told him !! He was shocked at my info that i had gathered from this site, when i mentioned thyroid uk he looked lije his blood pressure had gone up and he was chewing on a wasp!! I asked questions about my meds of carbi 20mg one a day and he has decided that i need to increase to 40 mgs now as free4 and free 3 still not down enough but improving. I did mention hashis but he said now lets not get complicated with them issues as its your thyroid! Well at this point i said it is a issue though and said its too techinical, "what a prat" i have had more bloods taken taken for levels and tsi for graves., he also has prescribed thyroxine 100mgs but not to take that yet until my bloids have come through and i get the nod from him- he said block and replace is done at this hosputal and is different wherever you go. Overall opinion im not greatly confident in him and may seek help elsewhere after next appointment in a couple of months.

As anyone else had a similar experience being on carbi then increasing it then block and replace. He said no titration.xultrasound on 3rd november on thyroid. 😨

Block and replace can be hit and miss getting the right doses, never worked for me and I got tired of the constant changes so I asked for RAI, job done 🤗

Thankyou bantam. Yes he did mention rai or surgery but they all mention that, i was quite adamant i didnt want rai because of being in contact with small children and a daughter whos 12. He said thats rubbish!! I surpose block and replace is to try and regulate levels but it will probably make you hypo anyway so no need for carbi?

I had RAI when my youngest was around 6-7 ish, it really wasn't a problem. I had also had surgery many years before.

Hashi's antibodies too technical for him! lol What a hoot! Still, at least he's testing for Grave's, which is progress!

Hashi's antibodies too technical for him!

It gets worse, it really does. And we trust them with our health!!!! However, it does make me feel that for an old gal with just 3 ancient GCE's I seem to know a ruddy sight more than some of these so called educated doctors where thyroid is concerned.

Indeed we do! And all that without once setting foot in their precious med schools!

It's not unusual for the endo to increase the carbi, because GPs only seem to prescribe a holding amount to get you through until your endo appointment. While you're under the endo, he should control the amount of carbi and Levo prescribed, even if (mainly for convenience) the prescriptions are actually issued by your GP's surgery.

Some places seem to prefer B&R, others titration. The research I've read suggests there is no clear difference in long-term outcome, but B&R may be unsuitable in certain cases, e.g. pregnancy. If your thyroid levels are remaining high as a result of Graves, you'll need the carbi to bring them down, they are unlikely to go back to normal by themselves, and living with the fast metabolism resulting from being hyper causes all sorts of problems. While the endo effectively patting you on the head and telling you not to worry your tiny (female) brain about technicalities is offensive, it could well be that the Graves is the main issue at the moment, and that's why they are getting that under control first. He is at least checking your latest tests before blindly prescribing the levo!

While I personally would prefer to try other options before RAI, there are people who have gone down this route, and been happy with their decision (see Bantam's reply).

How were your Graves and Hashis originally diagnosed ? Wasn't this from antibody tests ?

Hi there valarian only hashis was diagnosed through tpo antibodies, he advised i shoyld have tsi for graves tested yesterday but wont have results until 5 days time, endo said he will call with results but hold back on the levo until he says so as we wants to check bloods first, so at moment taking just carbi he was not concerned over hashis one bit. Far too techinical for my mere lady brain.ha. idiot he was peed of because he was expecting someone who knew jack about the thyroid! Going to take mine in split doses morning and night. Have noticed they are a different colour to my usual brand though.
